Why we love this

Rollin's gift for writing accessible, character-driven pieces shines here. Young pianists will connect immediately with the storytelling and playful imagery, while the writing stays musically honest and rewarding to practice.

What to expect

Creepy Crocodile captures mischief and intrigue with an early elementary touch. The music balances spooky charm with lighthearted fun, inviting players to inhabit the personality of their beanbag companion at the keyboard.

Who it's for

This piece speaks directly to elementary pianists who enjoy storytelling and imaginative play. It's equally rewarding for recital performances, festival participation, or simply adding joy to daily practice sessions.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the narrative quality of the piece. Think of yourself as narrating the crocodile's story, letting your hands and dynamics express personality rather than simply playing notes on the page.
  • Pay attention to the balance between the melody and accompaniment, ensuring your right hand sings without overwhelming the left hand foundation.
  • Use the fun lyrics as an interpretive guide. Even though you're playing solo piano, the words can shape your phrasing and help you find the emotional center of each section.

How to use it

Feature this as a solo performance in spring recitals or festival competitions. Its compact four-page length makes it ideal for younger students building their solo repertoire or for creating a cohesive program around the Bean Bag Zoo series.

Skills your students will build

  • Dynamic control and storytelling through musical character
  • Hand independence between melody and accompaniment
  • Rhythmic clarity and articulation in early elementary patterns
  • Sight-reading at the early elementary level
