Why we love this

This march grabs attention from the opening moments and sustains it throughout, making it an ideal choice when you need your band energized and engaged. The writing balances accessibility with musical substance; Grade 2.5 players get to handle real melodic and harmonic content rather than simplified filler, and the countermelody material gives your ensemble layers to balance and blend.

What to expect

Cougar Mountain March radiates forward momentum and optimism from its bold opening through its final moments. The spirited melodies and buoyant countermelodies create a sense of celebration that energizes both performers and listeners, perfect for occasions calling for confidence and brightness.

Who it's for

This piece works beautifully for Grade 2 through 3 concert bands seeking a march with genuine musicality and energy. Directors will appreciate the straightforward technical demands paired with engaging orchestration, making it accessible for developing ensembles while remaining musically satisfying.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the march tempo with confidence before the band enters; a crisp, steady pulse sets the tone for the buoyant character Hodges intends.
  • Shape the spirited melodies with natural phrase arcs rather than mechanical phrasing, allowing the melodic contour to breathe within the march framework.
  • Balance the countermelodies carefully so they complement rather than compete with the primary melodic line; assign your strongest section players to these parts.

How to use it

Open or close your next concert with this march to set or sustain an uplifted energy level. It also pairs well as a programming bridge between contrasting pieces, offering a moment of unambiguous musical vitality that audiences respond to immediately.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady march tempo and rhythm
  • Balancing multiple melodic lines within an ensemble texture
  • Shaping lyrical phrases within a march framework
  • Intonation in sustained harmonic progressions
  • Dynamic control and accent precision in spirited passages
