Description
This piece is the confluence of J.S. Bach and South America. A lively, Brazilian-influenced tune in C minor uses a chord progression, suggested by Bach, in jazz form. Confluence begins with a passionate cello solo and brief violin solo. All instrument groups (or student solos) have an opportunity to shine in the suggested solo section after the presentation of the tune, first by the violas.

Why we love this

Bratt writes with genuine knowledge of how strings work together across idioms. The piece respects the Grade 3.5 ensemble's abilities while creating real solo moments that reward individual preparation, and the fusion of Bach's harmonic language with Brazilian rhythmic energy gives students something genuinely compelling to play, not merely serviceable.

What to expect

Confluence opens with intimate passion, a cello voice calling out in minor-key urgency before warmth and light enter through the violin. The Brazilian-tinged harmonic motion feels both sophisticated and alive, propelling forward with rhythmic vitality while maintaining the introspective quality that minor mode and Bach's language naturally carry. Individual sections bloom into focus throughout, each bringing its own character to a piece that balances lyrical depth with contagious energy.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the intermediate level who are ready to handle ensemble independence and multiple solo spotlights without losing cohesion. This works especially well for programs seeking repertoire that honors both classical craft and contemporary musical voices, and for conductors who want students to experience joy in playing music that lives outside the standard canon.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening cello solo by pulling back upper strings during its first entrance; this passage sets the emotional tone and needs space to breathe before the violin responds.
  • Keep the Brazilian groove steady and anchored in the basses; without a secure pulse underneath, the jazz-influenced chord changes can feel uncertain rather than expressive.
  • Encourage soloists in the middle section to phrase idiomatically for their chosen voice part. A violin soloist might lean into lyrical ornamentation while a viola soloist could emphasize the warmth of the part's lower tessitura.
  • Shape the tutti sections with dynamic clarity so the transition into and out of solo spotlights feels intentional and shaped, not abrupt.

How to use it

Program Confluence on a concert celebrating musical fusion and cross-cultural conversation, either as a centerpiece of a thematic set or alongside other multicultural works. The Grade 3.5 level and solo opportunities make it ideal for a spring or end-of-year concert where you want to showcase both ensemble growth and individual student achievement in a single work.

  • Balancing ensemble blend with individual solo presence in a shared musical space
  • Responding to Bach-derived chord progressions and voice leading within a contemporary harmonic context
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity across Brazilian-influenced rhythmic figures while supporting harmonic movement
  • Ensemble independence through multiple simultaneous spotlight moments
