About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Butler University. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before transitioning to full-time composition, a shift that has made him one of the most prolific composers in American music education.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 works across every major ensemble and instrumental combination: concert band, orchestra, choir, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, and vocal music. Over seventeen million copies of his compositions have been purchased worldwide, with performances regularly heard on concert stages, radio broadcasts, and television programs internationally. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner strikes the exact balance needed at the 2.5 level: the opening fanfare commands attention and develops genuine musicianship, while the animated sections that follow never sacrifice accessibility for sophistication. Directors looking for a piece that builds program momentum without exhausting an intermediate band will find the length (2:15) and emotional arc perfectly calibrated for both rehearsal and performance impact.

What to expect

The piece opens with unmistakable confidence, its fanfare broadcasting purpose and energy. Once underway, the animated rhythms and contemporary harmonies create a forward-moving, contemporary sound that feels fresh without abandoning the concert band idiom, leaving audiences with a sense of optimism and determination.

Who it's for

This work is ideal for intermediate concert bands seeking repertoire with genuine musical substance and inspirational content suitable for festivals and concert programs. Students at this level will appreciate the straightforward scoring that lets them focus on expressive playing and rhythmic precision without technical overwhelm.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring the dramatic opening fanfare into sharp focus by ensuring the brass has crisp articulation and clear dynamic control from the first note; this sets the tone for the entire work.
  • Balance the contemporary harmonies in the middle section so they don't blur together; lean on your woodwinds to shape the harmonic movement and keep the animated rhythms propulsive.
  • Use the contrast between the bold introduction and the rhythmically driven sections to help students understand structural design; point out how the composer returns to elements from the opening to create unity.

How to use it

Program this as an opener or early piece on a concert to energize the audience and establish that your band commands the stage. Its uplifting character and festival-ready polish also make it a natural choice for spring concert programming or solo and ensemble festival competitions where bands need a confident statement piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation clarity and control in brass fanfare writing
  • Balance between contemporary harmonies and traditional concert band sonorities
  • Rhythmic precision and ensemble coordination in animated passages
  • Dynamic shaping and phrasing in inspirational melodic material
