James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has established himself as a prolific voice in music education, with more than 800 published works to his name. His credentials span from public school teaching (19+ years) to university clinics and international conducting appearances across the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England. He holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with graduate composition study under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University–Long Beach.

Ployhar's orchestration expertise developed through collaboration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has informed his compositional approach. He authored the Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music and translated into French and Norwegian for use throughout Scandinavia. His work has aired on network television and received performance worldwide. Recognized for his contributions to band music, Ployhar received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University.
