About the Composer: Earl J. Fox

Earl J. Fox

Earl J. Fox is a New Orleans native whose teaching career spanned two decades in the Orleans Parish School System, where he directed bands at both the junior and senior high levels before moving to South Side Elementary in Picayune, Mississippi. His credentials include a B.M.Ed. and M.M.Ed. from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Ph.D. in music from Louisiana State University.

Beyond the classroom, Fox has established himself as a clinician, festival adjudicator, and prolific arranger whose work reaches bands across the United States and internationally, including Marching Band Sampoerna in Jakarta. A National Board Certified teacher and active member of ASCAP, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Fox brings both scholarly rigor and practical experience to his original compositions for marching ensembles.

Why we love this

Con Slancio delivers infectious Latin-jazz energy without overcomplicating the ensemble or bogging down rehearsal time. The commanding harmonies and featured trumpet solo give your program sophistication and star power at Grade 3, and the piece's relentless forward motion keeps audiences engaged from the opening statement through the final measure.

What to expect

Con Slancio hits like a Havana street celebration transplanted onto the field. The piece opens with unmistakable swagger and never loses momentum, building layers of rhythmic and harmonic excitement that feel sophisticated without demanding virtuosic execution. It's the kind of arrangement that makes students hungry to play and audiences lean forward in their seats.

Who it's for

Marching bands at the Grade 3 level seeking an original work that combines contemporary Latin-jazz idioms with solid fundamental demands. This score works equally well for competitive marching ensembles looking for a dynamic high-energy selection and for concert marching bands that want to program something fresh and engaging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the Latin groove locked in the pit; consistent cowbell and clave articulation anchor everything else, especially when the trumpet steps out for the solo section.
  • Let the opening boldness breathe before the tune really takes flight. Commit fully to the dynamic contrasts rather than playing it safe at medium volume.
  • Work the brass section blend when harmonies stack up. The "commanding" quality comes from clarity and balance, not volume alone.
  • Give your trumpet soloist room to swing the phrase without rushing. Latin jazz phrasing sits behind the beat in a way that younger players sometimes miss in early run-throughs.

How to use it

This original fits perfectly in a mid-program position where you need an energy spike that won't drain your ensemble before a closing ballad or more demanding technical piece. The 2:10 runtime makes it ideal for competitive marching shows seeking a second or third selection that showcases versatility without extending the program length.

Skills your students will build

  • Latin and jazz swing rhythms (clave patterns, behind-the-beat phrasing)
  • Jazz ensemble blend and balance in thick harmonic voicings
  • Sectional independence while maintaining unified groove
  • Idiomatic trumpet phrasing and improvisation foundation
  • Dynamic control across a wide range of musical textures
