Each solo has enough musical personality to hold a judge's attention while remaining achievable for players still building consistency and tone.

Intermediate brass players preparing for state or regional solo competitions. Trombone, bassoon, and euphonium students in grades 6-9 will find solos at the right technical level with authentic competition credentials.

• Check your state's specific competition list before settling on your choice; while all seven solos appear on at least one state list, yours may have restrictions or requirements.
• Work closely with your accompanist early to lock in tempos and phrasing, since the piano part contains flexible scoring for multiple instruments.

Assign solos to students four to six weeks before your school's contest deadline, allowing time for rehearsal with accompanist and performance refinement. The variety means students with different strengths can each find a piece that plays to their strengths.
