About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings three decades of performance and teaching experience to his arrangements and compositions. A trumpet performer with credits including the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, he holds degrees in Music Education through the doctoral level and spent 20 years in classroom instrumental instruction. His work at Ithaca College's School of Music included seven years as assistant band director and four years leading the Music Education Department.

With over 600 published works across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Bullock has established himself as a prolific voice in educational music. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and served as a contributing arranger for Music Expressions, Alfred Music's school curriculum. His clinics and workshops have reached educators throughout the United States, Canada, and England, and he has maintained ASCAP membership since 1980.

Why we love this

Bullock understands exactly what graduation ceremonies require: music that sounds substantial and ceremonial without demanding virtuosity from your ensemble. This suite delivers flexibility that actually works. Start with strings alone if that is all you have, or layer in winds and percussion to match your orchestral forces, and the arrangement scales beautifully in every configuration.

What to expect

Ceremonial and uplifting. The fanfare announces occasion with bright energy, the processional unfolds with measured dignity, the anthem sits in familiar territory, and the recessional propels graduates forward with optimism. Throughout, the scoring maintains clarity and accessibility that allows young musicians to play with confidence rather than strain.

Who it's for

Orchestra directors and conductors managing graduation ceremonies where ensemble size varies. Whether you have a full orchestra with developed winds and percussion sections or primarily rely on strings with a few added instruments, this suite accommodates your actual instrumentation without compromise.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the fanfare's opening with clear articulation and confident dynamics to establish a festive tone immediately, then ease the transition into the processional's measured, stately character.
  • Balance the National Anthem so the melody remains audible across the full orchestra while harmonic voices provide harmonic support without overwhelming it.
  • Control tempo consistency across all four movements; use the score's indications as your foundation, then adjust slightly based on the processional's walking pace and ceremony timing.

How to use it

Program this as your graduation ceremony's complete musical framework, replacing the need to assemble separate pieces for different ceremonial moments. Its 5:09 duration fits within typical graduation timelines while giving you a cohesive musical statement that feels intentional and complete.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble balance in four-movement suite form
  • Conducting or playing through tempo and character changes across connected movements
  • Adapting instrumental voicing based on available orchestral forces
  • Intonation control in sustained harmonic passages (particularly the National Anthem arrangement)
