More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped music education for decades through his prolific output of pedagogically sound piano compositions. Since 1986, his work with Alfred Music has produced over 400 publications that span all student levels, earning him recognition as one of the most respected voices in educational piano repertoire. His career includes 24 years teaching piano pedagogy at the University of Montana, faculty positions at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge, and an active performance schedule as soloist and collaborative musician across North America and Asia.

Beyond the studio, Alexander remains deeply connected to the teaching community as a clinician at state and national conventions and has been commissioned by numerous music organizations to create new works. His influence extends internationally; he has adjudicated competitions, led masterclasses, and performed recitals throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. Based in Albuquerque, he continues composing and touring while maintaining the high pedagogical standards that define his entire catalog.

Why we love this

Early intermediate pianists need repertoire that entertains without overwhelming. Close Caper delivers character and personality in four pages, giving students a genuinely fun piece to learn rather than another etude dressed up as music. Alexander's gift for writing idiomatically for young hands means your students will sound better faster and want to practice.

What to expect

A lighthearted romp with genuine musical substance. The piece balances playful, character-driven passages with moments of musical breathing, creating an engaging narrative arc that keeps performers engaged and audiences entertained.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready for pieces with genuine musical personality and structural interest. This works well for students who've solidified basic technique but need engaging material that doesn't require advanced hand independence or stretch.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the caper theme like a comedic character; let articulation and tempo shape the playful tone
  • Map out the hand position changes early so students focus on musicality, not logistics
  • Experiment with subtle rubato in lyrical sections to contrast with the crisp rhythmic passages

How to use it

Program this in informal recitals, studio classes, or student showcase events where personality matters as much as technique. It works equally well as a stand-alone feature or paired with contrasting lyrical pieces to showcase musical range.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation control and its effect on character
  • Maintaining tempo consistency through rhythmic figures
  • Smooth hand position transitions across the keyboard
  • Shaping musical phrases with dynamic contrast
