Description

About the Composer: Claus Hessler

Claus Hessler

Claus Hessler stands among the world's most respected percussion educators, earning recognition from drumming legend Jim Chapin for both his stylistic versatility and technical mastery. His work with the Moeller technique and open-handed playing has made him a reference point for drummers worldwide, and many consider him the natural heir to Chapin's legacy in technique and pedagogy.

Based in Frankfurt, Hessler teaches at the University for Music and Performing Arts and the Berufsfachschule für Musik in Dinkelsbuehl while maintaining an active schedule of clinics and private instruction. His studio and touring experience spans jazz, Latin, big band, and commercial music across Europe. As a clinician for SABIAN, Vic Firth, Mapex, and Remo, he brings both deep instrument knowledge and real-world musicianship to his educational projects.

Why we love this

Most rudiment books present the material in isolation, but Hessler connects historical European drumming traditions to their transformation in the New World, then offers both original and modernized versions alongside Basel drumming influences. The inclusion of audio files and play-along tracks makes the stylistic and interpretive dimensions audible in ways a score alone cannot convey, turning abstract technical studies into living musical contexts.

What to expect

Stepping through a living archive of military and ceremonial drumming, where each piece carries its own history and character. The alternating versions create a dialogue between tradition and contemporary adaptation, letting you hear how the same essential rhythms breathe differently across contexts and centuries.

Who it's for

Snare drummers with solid rudiment fundamentals who want to move beyond mechanics into style and historical understanding. Percussion instructors preparing students for drum corps, Scottish pipe bands, or any ensemble where period-appropriate interpretation matters. Directors assembling percussion programs that value both technical rigor and musical context.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the original versions first to understand the historical context, then compare them directly to the modernized interpretations; this reinforces how the same rudiment can serve different musical vocabularies.
  • Use the MP3 references to internalize the appropriate sticking patterns and phrasing before developing your own interpretive approach.
  • Work through the pieces methodically; the book builds from foundational rudiments through complex garrison duty calls, so skipping around can obscure the pedagogical sequence.
  • Pay attention to the flute-parts insert when available; understanding the melodic context clarifies why certain sticking choices support the ensemble sound.

How to use it

Feature individual pieces or pairs (original and modernized versions) in percussion showcases to highlight the depth of rudiment literature beyond technical display. Incorporate selected calls and duties as opening or closing moments in concerts, especially those with colonial or military themes. Use as a semester-long snare curriculum that develops both independence from and respect for historical playing styles.

Skills your students will build

  • Interpreting rudiments in historically and stylistically appropriate ways
  • Reading and executing traditional garrison duty patterns with accurate ornamentation
  • Understanding the relationship between European drumming traditions and American fife-and-drum culture
  • Developing control across dynamic and textural variations of a single rudiment
  • Coordinating snare parts with melodic instruments using provided flute lines
