Donna Brink Fox

Donna Brink Fox holds the Eisenhart Professorship in Music Education at the Eastman School of Music and directs the university's Early Childhood Music Program. Her scholarship and teaching practice focus on music learning for the youngest students, informed by her doctoral work at Ohio State University and her leadership of Eastman's Orff Schulwerk teacher training courses.

Brink Fox has shaped the field through publications in major journals including the Music Educators Journal and the International Journal of Music Education, and through presentations at conferences hosted by Chamber Music America, ISME, and MENC. Her work as an international consultant has taken her throughout the United States and Australia, and she was recognized with the Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996.

Why we love this

This kit removes the guesswork from early childhood music teaching by combining comprehensive lesson plans, ready-to-use songs with full recordings, and manipulatives that transform abstract musical ideas into tangible experiences. The included plush characters and reproducible activity pages give classroom teachers with varying musical backgrounds the confidence to deliver structured, developmentally appropriate music instruction that young learners genuinely enjoy.

What to expect

A warm, purposeful introduction to music that honors how young children learn through play, movement, and storytelling. The presence of familiar characters and the rhythmic structure of the lessons create a safe space where singing, listening, and creative movement feel natural rather than instructional.

Who it's for

Early childhood teachers, preschool and kindergarten music specialists, and classroom educators who want a complete, structured music program for children ages 4 to 6 but lack formal training in music pedagogy. This kit is also valuable for homeschool parents and community center instructors leading music groups for young learners.

How to get the most out of it

  • Play the recorded songs multiple times throughout the week so children internalize melodies and can participate more fully with each repetition.
  • Introduce the plush characters during story segments and let them 'lead' movement activities; young children respond strongly to personification and will mimic behaviors modeled by beloved figures.
  • Use the reproducible pages as independent or small-group follow-up activities rather than whole-class worksheets, allowing children to engage with concepts at their own pace while you observe and assess understanding.

How to use it

Deliver this 10-lesson sequence as a complete semester or trimester unit within your general music curriculum, or extract individual lessons to integrate into thematic units in your classroom. The accompanying CD ensures musical consistency whether you have a piano available or not, making it equally practical for music specialists and non-musician classroom teachers.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with accuracy and confidence in a group setting
  • Responding to music through purposeful movement and gesture
  • Listening discriminatively to identify melodic and rhythmic patterns
  • Understanding foundational musical concepts through narrative and play
  • Following multi-step directions within structured learning experiences
  • Building vocabulary around musical sounds and feelings
