About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped piano pedagogy for over three decades through her work as a composer, clinician, and studio teacher. Her educational compositions span all levels and have become staples in American piano studios and festivals; she is a certified piano teacher through the Music Teachers National Association, Florida State Music Teachers Association, and National Guild of Piano Teachers, and has led workshops internationally in Australia, New Zealand, and across the United States at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.

A Florida State University graduate and longtime studio owner in Lake City, Florida, Mier joined Alfred Music Publishing in 1989 and has since authored or co-authored more than 200 educational piano publications. Her collections, including the Jazz, Rags & Blues series and Romantic Impressions series, are recognized by the National Federation of Music Clubs and played by students worldwide. She remains active in church music and professional accompaniment while serving the music education community as a state and national adjudicator.

Why we love this

Mier writes jazz and blues arrangements that don't feel like exercises in style but rather genuine recompositions of beloved classical material. Late intermediate pianists get to experience Beethoven, Rossini, and Rimsky-Korsakov in syncopated contexts that deepen their understanding of harmonic rhythm and swing feel while keeping the melodies instantly recognizable and musically satisfying.

What to expect

These arrangements invite the pianist into a conversation between two musical worlds. Classical melodies you know well suddenly swing and shuffle; the harmonic language shifts from Romantic lushness to bluesy dissonance. There's delight in recognition mixed with the challenge of adapting your touch, phrasing, and sense of pulse to accommodate ragtime syncopation and jazz chromaticism.

Who it's for

Late intermediate pianists ready to expand beyond classical repertoire into styles that demand rhythmic sophistication and expressive flexibility. Pianists approaching the intermediate-advanced transition will find these arrangements stretch their musical vocabulary without overwhelming their technical foundation, making them ideal for students curious about jazz and improvisation-adjacent playing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the swing eighth-note feel early in rehearsal; play the accompaniment recording to internalize the rhythmic pocket before tackling the syncopated right-hand lines.
  • Lean into the ragtime pieces with articulate left-hand comping; these arrangements ask the pianist to think like a rhythm section player, not just a melodist.
  • Balance the blues vocabulary (bent notes, blue notes, call-and-response phrasing) with classical voice leading; the tension between the two styles is where these pieces come alive.
  • Use rubato sparingly in the jazz numbers; unlike Romantic-era classical music, these arrangements sit best when the rhythm stays grounded and the melody ornaments the groove.

How to use it

Pair these pieces with classical originals in a recital exploring how composers and arrangers recontextualize melody across genre and era. A single track from this collection works beautifully on a spring or summer student showcase, introducing listeners to jazz and blues while maintaining the classical foundation that defines your studio's core repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing swing eighth notes and syncopated rhythmic patterns
  • Understanding harmonic language of jazz and blues (seventh chords, chromatic alterations, ii-V-I progressions)
  • Developing flexible touch and phrasing appropriate to multiple stylistic contexts
  • Comping and rhythm section thinking at the piano
  • Interpreting ornamentation and stylistic articulation specific to ragtime and jazz idioms
  • Recognizing classical melody and structure within contemporary harmonic contexts
