About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped contemporary piano pedagogy through decades of prolific composition and teaching. Since joining Alfred Music Publishing in 1989, she has written more than 200 educational publications that reach students across all proficiency levels; her Jazz, Rags & Blues series and Romantic Impressions collections have become staples in studios and classrooms worldwide.

Mier's credibility stems from her dual life as both composer and educator. She maintained a private studio in Lake City, Florida for many years while remaining active in church music and professional accompanying work. Her credentials include state and national certification through the Music Teachers National Association, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She frequently adjudicates and presents workshops internationally, having clinicked in Australia, New Zealand, and at major conferences including the World Piano Pedagogy Conference and the Music Teachers National Association Convention.

Why we love this

Mier understands what intermediate pianists crave: familiar melodies with genuine harmonic and rhythmic swagger. These arrangements strip away the stuffiness that can surround classical literature and reveal its inherent groove; students feel like they're not just practicing but performing jazz with intention. The writing is sophisticated enough to demand real musicality yet never obscures the joy of playing recognizable material in a refreshing context.

What to expect

Opening these pages feels like attending a concert where Chopin and Ragtime sat down together and found they had more in common than anyone expected. The arrangements shimmer with unexpected chromatic color, syncopated rhythms that sit just off the beat, and blue notes that soften classical profiles into something sultry and modern. It's learned music that plays loose.

Who it's for

Intermediate to late-intermediate pianists who know enough classical repertoire to recognize these melodies and want to explore them in new harmonic and stylistic contexts. This book works especially well for students drawn to jazz and popular music who need a bridge into those idioms through material that feels both contemporary and rooted in concert tradition.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach the jazz harmonies with confidence. These aren't "wrong notes" added to classical themes; they're the harmonic language of the piece itself. Play them with the same commitment you'd give to any classical progression.
  • Listen closely to where swing feel applies versus straight rhythm. Some pieces lean hard into ragtime's syncopation while others sit closer to blues ballad time. The written notation and title often signal the right interpretation.
  • Let the blues inflections breathe. Bent notes, blue notes, and slight rhythmic pushes work best when they feel conversational rather than mechanical; space between phrases matters as much as the notes themselves.
  • Balance left-hand accompaniment patterns with the melodic line. In ragtime arrangements especially, the accompaniment has its own momentum. Play it as a partner to the melody, not a servant.

How to use it

These pieces shine in student recitals where you want to showcase both classical literacy and jazz fluency without forcing a choice between the two. They also work beautifully as transition repertoire for students moving from classical training into jazz piano study, or as performance material for studio showcases that celebrate genre diversity. Programming one alongside a straight classical piece and a contemporary work creates a refreshing survey of piano literature.

Skills your students will build

  • Jazz harmony and extended chords (seventh chords, alterations, substitutions)
  • Interpreting swing feel and syncopated rhythm notation
  • Blues vocabulary including blue notes, bent notes, and blues scale passages
  • Balancing independent melodic and accompaniment lines in jazz contexts
  • Stylistic interpretation across ragtime, blues, and jazz idioms from classical source material
  • Sight-reading classical melodic material within unfamiliar harmonic frameworks
