About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of hands-on experience across performance, composition, and music pedagogy to his arrangements. A trumpet performer who worked with ensembles ranging from the Miami Philharmonic to traveling dance bands, he holds degrees through the doctoral level in Music Education and has composed and arranged over 600 works spanning concert band, orchestra, jazz, and marching band repertoire.
During 20 years of classroom teaching, Bullock served as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music and chaired the Music Education Department there. His textbook contributions include co-authoring the Belwin 21st Century Band Method, and he has conducted clinics across the United States, Canada, and England. An ASCAP member since 1980, his work reflects a deep understanding of what student musicians can accomplish at each level of development.
Why we love this
Bullock's orchestration here respects the intermediate ensemble's capabilities without sacrificing the character of these beloved carols. The flexibility to perform with strings alone or add winds incrementally means you can program this effectively regardless of instrumentation available, making it a genuinely practical solution for schools where full orchestration isn't always possible.
What to expect
These three carols unfold with warmth and accessibility, honoring their traditional melodies while allowing the orchestra to enjoy rich harmonic support. The intermediate Grade 2.5 writing sits comfortably under the fingers, letting musicians focus on bringing out the beauty of familiar tunes rather than wrestling with technical demands.
Who it's for
Conductors leading intermediate to early advanced orchestras who need reliable, flexible holiday programming that doesn't require a specific instrumentation. This works equally well for a strings-only ensemble, a mixed ensemble with available winds, or a full orchestra, making it ideal for schools with variable ensemble sizes across rehearsals or performance dates.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the melodic voices across your string sections; these carols need clarity in the tune, not thickness. Adjust dynamic layers so each carol's signature melody cuts through clearly.
- If adding winds to the strings-only framework, bring them in gradually across the three carols rather than all at once. This keeps the progression fresh and showcases orchestration variety.
- Allow the familiar melodies to breathe. Resist rushing the pacing; let the audience settle into the comfort these carols offer.
- Use the conductor score to manage transitions between the three carols. Each has its own character, so a distinct gesture and tempo check prevents the medley from feeling rushed.
How to use it
Program this as a complete holiday suite for a winter concert, or extract individual carols to anchor different sections of your program. The flexibility to perform with whatever instrumentation you have on hand that evening makes this a reliable choice for school concerts where full orchestra attendance varies.
Skills your students will build
- Reading and balancing multiple orchestral voices simultaneously
- Adaptive ensemble playing (adjusting balance and blend when instrumentation changes)
- Executing clear phrasing across eight-bar and 16-bar phrases
- Managing tempo consistency in familiar melodies without dragging or rushing
- Responding to conductor cues that distinguish between three distinct harmonic environments
