Description
Movie themes have their own special appeal. Their role is to convey and amplify the atmosphere and emotions of moving pictures. In many cases they take on a life of their own and it is such titles as these, classics in their own right, which we selected for this book. With this ‘Cinema Classics’ series we wanted to make sure that musicians at home were given the chance to play along with real musicians on the accompanying CD, not digitally created sounds. With a lot of effort and patience in both arranging this broad musical palette and recording the play-along CD, we have been able to create play-alongs that are live studio recordings. Through this we can make a broad spectrum of styles accessible to the player, be it a classical orchestra, a jazz orchestra, a jazz combo, a rock and pop band or any of the possible line-ups in between. We are especially proud to have top-class musicians of the contemporary European music scene on our recordings. Their unique interpretations make it a worthwhile experience to just listen to the tracks, let alone having yourself accompanied by top notch musicians. Rock, swing, bluster and groove with these playbacks. Titles: As Time Goes By (Soundtrack: "Casablanca") * Ghostbusters (Soundtrack: "Ghostbusters") * Gonna Fly Now (Soundtrack: "Rocky") * Hedwig‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Philosopher‘s Stone") * Hogwart‘s Hymn (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire") * I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Soundtrack: "Armageddon") * In Dreams (Soundtrack: "The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring") * James Bond Theme (Soundtrack: "Dr. No") * Miss Marple‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Agatha Christie‘s Murder She Said") * Over the Rainbow (Soundtrack: "The Wizard of Oz") * Pink Panther (Soundtrack: "The Pink Panther") * Star Wars (Main Theme) (Soundtrack: "Star Wars®")

More about this title

About the Composer: Vahid Matejko

Vahid Matejko is an arranger and composer working across contemporary European music, known for creating accessible yet musically satisfying arrangements for ensemble play-along recordings. His work emphasizes bringing professional studio interpretations within reach of developing musicians, prioritizing authentic orchestration over digital simulation.

Why we love this

The live studio recordings elevate this collection far beyond typical play-along books. Hearing authentic orchestral, jazz, and ensemble interpretations transforms practice into genuine musical collaboration rather than digital accompaniment. These are the kinds of recordings that inspire students to listen closely and refine their phrasing to match the professionals they're playing alongside.

What to expect

Stepping into the shoes of a studio session musician. One moment you're floating over a lush string arrangement; the next you're grooving in a jazz combo or cutting through a rock-and-roll rhythm section. Each theme carries the cinematic weight of its original score while remaining accessible and rewarding to play.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophone players at the intermediate level who want to expand beyond standard repertoire while building confidence in ensemble playing. This collection serves students ready to tackle contemporary film music and jazz-influenced arrangements, and musicians who appreciate hearing their part in a full orchestral or band context.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the full accompaniment track before playing through the melody. Notice how the arrangement sets up the harmonic and rhythmic context you'll enter.
  • Pay attention to the dynamic arc of each theme's original film context. These melodies carry emotional weight; honor that in your interpretation rather than treating them as exercise material.
  • In swing and jazz-inflected charts, lock into the groove early and trust the rhythm section beneath you. The accompaniment musicians are listening for your commitment to the pocket.
  • For the classical orchestral arrangements, shape your phrases to breathe with the string sections. Let them guide your dynamic contours and phrasing lengths.

How to use it

Feature these arrangements in a pops or crossover concert that celebrates film music's cultural reach. The recognizable titles draw audiences while the varied instrumentation contexts (orchestra, jazz ensemble, rock band) showcase your tenor player's versatility. These also work beautifully as solo feature material within a larger concert program.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing over live ensemble accompaniments and matching ensemble phrasing
  • Interpreting melodies across multiple musical styles (classical orchestra, jazz swing, rock, pop)
  • Balancing tone and presence as a featured melodic voice within different ensemble textures
  • Responding dynamically to rhythm section grooves and harmonic support
