Description
Movie themes have their own special appeal. Their role is to convey and amplify the atmosphere and emotions of moving pictures. In many cases they take on a life of their own and it is such titles as these, classics in their own right, which we selected for this book. With this ‘Cinema Classics’ series we wanted to make sure that musicians at home were given the chance to play along with real musicians on the accompanying CD, not digitally created sounds. With a lot of effort and patience in both arranging this broad musical palette and recording the play-along CD, we have been able to create play-alongs that are live studio recordings. Through this we can make a broad spectrum of styles accessible to the player, be it a classical orchestra, a jazz orchestra, a jazz combo, a rock and pop band or any of the possible line-ups in between. We are especially proud to have top-class musicians of the contemporary European music scene on our recordings. Their unique interpretations make it a worthwhile experience to just listen to the tracks, let alone having yourself accompanied by top notch musicians. Rock, swing, bluster and groove with these playbacks. Titles: As Time Goes By (Soundtrack: "Casablanca") * Ghostbusters (Soundtrack: "Ghostbusters") * Gonna Fly Now (Soundtrack: "Rocky") * Hedwig‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Philosopher‘s Stone") * Hogwart‘s Hymn (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire") * I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Soundtrack: "Armageddon") * In Dreams (Soundtrack: "The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring") * James Bond Theme (Soundtrack: "Dr. No") * Miss Marple‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Agatha Christie‘s Murder She Said") * Over the Rainbow (Soundtrack: "The Wizard of Oz") * Pink Panther (Soundtrack: "The Pink Panther") * Star Wars (Main Theme) (Soundtrack: "Star Wars®")

More about this title

Why we love this

The live studio recordings elevate this collection far beyond typical play-along books. Matejko's arrangements span genuine stylistic range, from classical orchestration to swing and rock grooves, giving flutists authentic context for how these melodies function across genres. Pairing beloved film themes with professional accompaniment creates a natural incentive for focused, engaged practice.

What to expect

Cinematic emotion meets musical immediacy. These arrangements capture the sweep and personality of their source material while centering the flute's voice, creating moments of genuine lyrical beauty alongside rhythmic energy. Playing these themes feels less like technical study and more like joining a film score session.

Who it's for

Intermediate flutists seeking repertoire that bridges the gap between classical technique and contemporary popular music. This collection works equally well for recital material, casual ensemble playing, or solo practice with professional accompaniment. Students drawn to film music find genuine motivation in playing recognizable themes alongside skilled musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the original film versions before rehearsing with the CD. Notice how the flute sits in the orchestration; this will guide your dynamic choices and phrasing when you're featured against the accompanying musicians.
  • Study the full arrangement on the CD first without playing along. Hearing the other instruments' roles clarifies rhythmic nuances and harmonic movement that may be invisible in the flute line alone.
  • Match the tempo and style of the live recording carefully. These aren't metronomic tracks; the musicians breathe and flex together, so staying locked with the ensemble requires active listening, not mechanical timing.

How to use it

Program individual selections as recital fillers that appeal to audiences beyond classical concert attendees. The variety in style and mood makes this ideal for mixed-level flute choirs or as enrichment material alongside standard method books. Consider featuring one movement in a pops concert to bridge your classical and contemporary programming.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with ensemble while maintaining individual musical line
  • Adapting articulation and phrasing to match live accompaniment styles (orchestral, jazz, rock)
  • Listening and responding to dynamic nuance from accompanying musicians
  • Stylistic interpretation across multiple genres within a single collection
