Description
Movie themes have their own special appeal. Their role is to convey and amplify the atmosphere and emotions of moving pictures. In many cases they take on a life of their own and it is such titles as these, classics in their own right, which we selected for this book. With this ‘Cinema Classics’ series we wanted to make sure that musicians at home were given the chance to play along with real musicians on the accompanying CD, not digitally created sounds. With a lot of effort and patience in both arranging this broad musical palette and recording the play-along CD, we have been able to create play-alongs that are live studio recordings. Through this we can make a broad spectrum of styles accessible to the player, be it a classical orchestra, a jazz orchestra, a jazz combo, a rock and pop band or any of the possible line-ups in between. We are especially proud to have top-class musicians of the contemporary European music scene on our recordings. Their unique interpretations make it a worthwhile experience to just listen to the tracks, let alone having yourself accompanied by top notch musicians. Rock, swing, bluster and groove with these playbacks. Titles: As Time Goes By (Soundtrack: "Casablanca") * Ghostbusters (Soundtrack: "Ghostbusters") * Gonna Fly Now (Soundtrack: "Rocky") * Hedwig‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Philosopher‘s Stone") * Hogwart‘s Hymn (Soundtrack: "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire") * I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Soundtrack: "Armageddon") * In Dreams (Soundtrack: "The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring") * James Bond Theme (Soundtrack: "Dr. No") * Miss Marple‘s Theme (Soundtrack: "Agatha Christie‘s Murder She Said") * Over the Rainbow (Soundtrack: "The Wizard of Oz") * Pink Panther (Soundtrack: "The Pink Panther") * Star Wars (Main Theme) (Soundtrack: "Star Wars®")

More about this title

Why we love this

The live studio recordings elevate this beyond typical play-along books. Hearing actual European jazz and classical musicians respond to your phrasing transforms practice from accompaniment into genuine ensemble playing. Alto saxophonists rarely get collections this stylistically diverse, and the film music context gives each arrangement its own dramatic identity.

What to expect

Stepping into a recording studio where a real band is already playing. The arrangements respect the emotional weight of their source material while giving the saxophone room to be the voice that carries the story. You'll hear swing, rock energy, classical lyricism, and noir sensibility depending on which theme you're tackling.

Who it's for

Alto saxophonists in late intermediate to advanced ranges who want to apply their technique to recognizable melodies without sacrificing musical substance. This works equally well for solo practice, studio lessons, or recital preparation, and appeals to players who engage with pop and film music alongside concert repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the original film version first. Knowing how the theme functions in context helps you understand the emotional arc the arrangement is building, especially in pieces like Hedwig's Theme where orchestral color matters.
  • Balance your tone with the recorded accompaniment's dynamics. These are live recordings with natural ebb and flow, not perfectly leveled backing tracks, so listen actively and adjust your volume accordingly.
  • Lock into the rhythm section early in each track. The swing feels and groove-based arrangements (particularly in Ghostbusters and Gonna Fly Now) require you to sit precisely with the bass and drums rather than fight them.
  • Shape phrases like a singer would. Many of these themes have vocal origins or vocal-like lines; treating your saxophone line with that legit melodic weight will make the accompaniment respond more organically.

How to use it

These work as accessible but sophisticated recital pieces, especially for community band or school concert contexts where audiences recognize the titles immediately. Program them as a thematic group to showcase stylistic range, or use individual tracks as encores that feel both polished and fun.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing and articulation across multiple genres (orchestral, jazz, rock, pop)
  • Listening and responding to live accompaniment with flexible tempo and dynamics
  • Stylistic interpretation: recognizing and executing swing feel, straight-eighths groove, classical phrasing, and legato vs. articulated approaches
  • Intonation and balance in ensemble contexts where the accompaniment is not perfectly aligned with traditional lead sheets
