About the Arranger: Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke has shaped church and school music for over five decades through his work as a composer, arranger, and producer. His catalog spans hundreds of published works and recordings, and his choral composition The Majesty and Glory of Your Name remains a staple in worship spaces worldwide. His educational background includes degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward, along with a California Lifetime Music Credential in Secondary Music.

Fettke's career reflects deep roots in both institutional and congregational music. He directed choirs in churches of varying sizes for more than thirty years, taught vocal music in California public schools, and served as Director of Choral Activities for the Redwood Christian School System. He shaped worship music at a national scale as creator and Senior Editor of The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration, which has distributed over three million copies since 1986, and as Senior Editor of The Celebration Hymnal. He now resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Fettke's arrangements honor the emotional weight of these carols without demanding virtuosic pyrotechnics. Each arrangement sits comfortably under the hands of an accomplished intermediate pianist while maintaining genuine sophistication in voicing and harmonic movement, making this collection equally valuable for recital preparation and seasonal worship programming.

What to expect

These arrangements marry the devotional simplicity of Christmas carols with refined harmonic language that suggests reverence without excess. From the intimate delicacy of early carols to fuller, more resounding passages, the collection moves through seasons of wonder and celebration while maintaining an underlying elegance.

Who it's for

Advanced high school pianists and early college-level students seeking polished recital material with spiritual substance. Church pianists and worship leaders who want arrangements that reflect congregational familiarity with these carols while adding musical depth beyond hymnal settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the sustained hymnic textures by maintaining consistent voicing clarity; resist the urge to press into the keys, instead using controlled weight to articulate inner voices.
  • Honor the liturgical roots of these carols by observing phrase shapes with gentle rubato rather than metronomic precision, allowing each arrangement to breathe naturally.
  • Explore the dynamic range within each piece before settling on interpretation; Fettke's harmonies often suggest color and contrast within modest volume boundaries.

How to use it

Perfect for a church Christmas Eve service, a Lessons and Carols program, or a holiday recital paired with instrumental or vocal collaborators. The 40-page scope allows you to program a complete thematic set or to cherry-pick arrangements that complement your ensemble's other holiday selections.
