More about this title

About the Author: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin built her reputation as both a performing pianist and a composer whose students consistently win competitions. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Oakland University School of Performing Arts, and her teaching extends far beyond her studio; she has led workshops and masterclasses across North America and Asia, reaching audiences in more than 200 cities.

Rollin's compositional credentials run deep. The MTNA commissioned her for their prestigious From the Pen to the Premiere series, resulting in Suite Detroit for flute, alto saxophone, and piano, which premiered at the 2018 MTNA national conference. Her work has been featured in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin, and she has judged major competitions including the MTNA Student Composition Competition and the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. In 2018, the Steinway Society honored her with a recital featuring her multimedia series Museum Masterpieces, which won an ASCAP award.

Why we love this

Rollin understands what families actually want to play together: recognizable melodies arranged with enough musical substance to keep students engaged without overwhelming them. This Value Pack bundles three books across a manageable level progression, so you're not hunting through different publishers or guessing what comes next pedagogically.

What to expect

These arrangements respect the familiar warmth of traditional carols while adding harmonic color and thoughtful accompaniment patterns that make them sound fresh. Playing through the series feels like watching a composer gradually expand a student's musical vocabulary without any rough jumps in difficulty.

Who it's for

Students progressing from early to late intermediate levels who want to perform holiday music that feels genuine, not watered down. Teachers building a holiday recital program that engages families without requiring specialized ensemble skills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance melody and accompaniment by thinking of the piece as a conversation rather than a solo performance; let the harmony breathe underneath the tune.
  • Shape phrases by listening for the natural landing points Rollin creates, then use pedal strategically to connect ideas without muddying the texture.
  • Record yourself playing through all three books in sequence to hear how Rollin builds complexity across the series; this reveals her harmonic and rhythmic fingerprint.

How to use it

String the three books across separate holiday performances or seasonal studio recitals, using earlier books for younger students and later books for advanced intermediates who need substantial material. You can also program pieces from all three levels in a single family holiday concert, pairing them with student performances at different levels to showcase range.

Skills your students will build

  • Pedal control and sensitivity to harmonic texture
  • Phrase shaping and melodic expression in arranged material
  • Reading varied accompaniment patterns and rhythmic figures
  • Balancing independent melodic and harmonic layers
  • Stylistic interpretation within a consistent compositional voice
