About the Arranger: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck oversees choral publications at Alfred Music and brings decades of experience as both composer and arranger to his work. With over 450 choral compositions, vocal resources, and children's musicals in print, Beck has established himself as a trusted voice in music education; his writing appears in classrooms and on concert stages worldwide, and his contributions to vocal pedagogy include the widely adopted resources Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique.

Beyond the page, Beck remains active as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician for music educators across the United States and internationally. He has been commissioned to conduct and compose for honor choirs of all ages, including all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast. A tenor himself, Beck has performed with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has served as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992. His degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University anchor his commitment to choral artistry and music literacy.

Why we love this

Beck's country arrangement captures the irreverent joy of holiday music without losing musicality. The fixed jamboree rhythm and down-home harmonies give singers a clear, energetic framework to perform with confidence, while the five-carol medley packs seasonal content into a tight three minutes, making this ideal for directors who need festive impact without sacrificing rehearsal time.

What to expect

Pure holiday fun with a twang. The country instrumentation and persistent jamboree beat create a party atmosphere, while the familiar carol melodies ground listeners in the season. This is music that wants to make you smile and tap your foot at the same time.

Who it's for

Directors who want a crowd-pleasing holiday number that avoids the treacly and generic. This works for choirs at any level comfortable with secular carols and willing to embrace an energetic, unapologetic novelty arrangement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic pulse. The unchanging jamboree beat should feel infectious and propulsive; keep the accompaniment track driving forward so singers lock into that country groove.
  • Balance the familiar melodies against the harmony arrangement. Singers often default to the original tune, so isolate sections where the lower voices carry the melody and have them claim those lines with the same confidence as the sopranos.
  • Let the novelty breathe without overselling it. The humor lands naturally when the singing is clean and the harmonies are locked; avoid cartoon performances that undercut the actual musicianship.

How to use it

Perfect as a closing number or finale for a holiday concert, especially paired with one or two traditionally arranged carols to bookend the evening. The brevity and energy also make it excellent for casual performances, school assemblies, or community events where you need immediate audience engagement.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with rhythmic precision in a consistent, driving meter
  • Balancing familiar melodies with unfamiliar harmony lines
  • Performing novelty arrangements with musical conviction rather than parody
  • Ensemble blend in country-style vocal production
