Why we love this

This book pairs well-chosen holiday repertoire with thoughtfully designed activity pages that reinforce core musicianship without feeling like drill work. Students encounter familiar carols they'll recognize and enjoy playing, while the integrated games, puzzles, and theory exercises keep engagement high throughout the season.

What to expect

Playful and celebratory, these beloved carols invite comfortable performance from students who may still be building technical security. The accessible arrangements let musicians focus on making the music sound warm and expressive rather than wrestling with complex notation.

Who it's for

Second and third-year piano students who are building confidence with familiar material and need engaging reinforcement of foundational skills. This book works especially well for students who respond to variety and enjoy the intersection of performance and creative activity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the activity pages strategically across the practice week so students don't rush through the music to reach the puzzles; use the activities as rewards after solid rehearsal.
  • Encourage students to listen for the harmonic movement beneath melody lines, since many of these carols have straightforward progressions that reward musical phrasing.
  • Have students identify the form and structure of each carol before playing; recognizing patterns helps them internalize the music more quickly.
  • Use the written exercises and coloring pages as homework to extend learning beyond lesson time and reinforce note reading in a low-pressure setting.

How to use it

Assign this book during November and December to provide both performance material for holiday recitals and a motivating practice resource when the season can otherwise disrupt routine. The 11 carols offer enough variety for solo performance, festive studio gatherings, or informal family playing.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading melody in treble clef with steady rhythmic accuracy
  • Recognizing and playing common chord progressions
  • Understanding basic rhythm patterns and note values
  • Identifying musical terms and expressive markings in context
  • Strengthening sight-reading of straightforward melodies
