About the Arranger: Benjamin Harlan

Benjamin Harlan

Benjamin Harlan serves as Dean of the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he shapes the next generation of church music leaders. His compositions and arrangements span choral, keyboard, and handbell literature across multiple major publishers, earning him ASCAP recognition every year since 1990.

Harlan's career in sacred music includes teaching positions at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and music ministry roles at churches throughout Louisiana and Texas. He holds degrees from Baylor University (B.M. and M.M.) and a Doctor of Musical Arts from SBTS, and maintains active membership in the American Choral Directors Association and the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference.

Why we love this

Harlan crafts arrangements that honor the carol tradition while giving orchestras genuine work to do. The four-suite structure lets you program carols flexibly across the season or present them as a unified cantata, and the full orchestration transforms familiar melodies into rich, layered soundscapes that engage your entire ensemble.

What to expect

Reverent but never static. The orchestral writing wraps carols in warm, modern harmonies while preserving their melodic identity. You get the familiarity that audiences love paired with arrangements sophisticated enough to hold a concert's weight.

Who it's for

Choirs working with full orchestra or capable symphonic bands who want substantial Christmas programming beyond single carols. Churches, concert halls, and schools with advanced ensembles will find four complete suites that showcase both traditional carols and Harlan's arranging craft.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choir and orchestra so neither overwhelms the other; the orchestration supports the text, not the reverse.
  • Shape each suite as its own statement rather than rushing through all four consecutively; the contrast between them sustains listener attention.
  • Prepare your string sections early on the sustained passages that sit beneath the choral lines; these moments define the warmth of the arrangement.

How to use it

Open your Christmas concert with one suite, anchor the middle section with another, and close with a third for a program that deepens in musical substance without feeling repetitive. Alternatively, present all four suites as the centerpiece of a holiday cantata service, letting the orchestration carry listeners through the theological arc of the season.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing choir and orchestra blend in sustained passages
  • Singing arranged carol melodies with harmonic independence from orchestral parts
  • Responding to orchestral texture cues in four separate suite structures
  • Maintaining intonation through rich harmonic underlay
