About the Arranger: John Cacavas

John Cacavas

John Cacavas has built a career spanning film, television, and concert music across North America and internationally. His work as a composer and arranger has reached mass audiences through over 400 television episodes, 50 made-for-TV films, and 15 feature films. A graduate of Northwestern University with degrees in Composition and Theory, Cacavas served as an arranger with the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., where he honed his craft within one of America's most respected military ensembles.

Beyond his screen and broadcast work, Cacavas has contributed significantly to music education and professional development. He authored two instructional books, Orchestration and Music Arranging and The Art of Writing Music, sharing decades of arranging expertise with musicians and composers seeking to deepen their craft.

Why we love this

Cacavas understands what intermediate brass players need: accessible voicings that sit comfortably in the staff while maintaining musical integrity. These holiday arrangements balance genuine festive energy with realistic technical demands, so your ensemble sounds polished without drowning in high passages or awkward divisi writing. Nineteen selections means you can program flexibly for December concerts or build a seasonal rotation without overloading rehearsal calendars.

What to expect

These arrangements capture the warmth and festivity of holiday music without relying on heavy orchestration or dense harmonic complexity. Melodies emerge clearly against supportive harmonies, creating an accessible yet satisfying sound that feels celebratory and genuine rather than overly simplified.

Who it's for

This collection serves intermediate brass ensembles looking for quality holiday literature without extensive rehearsal overhead. Brass choirs, quintet plus additional players, and community band brass sections will all find playable, engaging material at an achievable technical level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic line in your part with the upper brass; Trombone 1 frequently carries substantial material, so shape phrases with intent rather than sitting back as accompaniment.
  • Watch the dynamic landscape across the collection. These pieces vary widely in texture and volume, so mark your part clearly during sectional rehearsals to catch unexpected drops or builds.
  • Anchor ensemble rhythms with precision in the slower, more lyrical arrangements. Trombone 1 often provides harmonic stability, and slight timing hesitations will expose ensemble cohesion issues.
  • Use the full dynamic range available to you. Cacavas writes for intermediate players who can execute mf to f passages cleanly; exploit that palette to color the holiday mood.

How to use it

Build your December concert around this collection as the primary brass showcase, mixing faster, spirited pieces with one or two slower, more reflective arrangements to create pacing and variety. The 19-piece depth allows you to program a 45-minute-plus brass ensemble segment without repeating selections, ideal for schools balancing multiple winter performance ensembles.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing at intermediate range comfortably across the staff
  • Executing dynamic control from mf through ff across varied harmonic contexts
  • Maintaining harmonic balance within a brass ensemble texture
  • Responding to stylistic shifts across 19 different holiday arrangements
  • Sustaining articulation clarity at moderate to moderately fast tempos
