About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan studied music education at Oklahoma State University and earned her graduate degree from the University of Oklahoma. She spent 28 years teaching choral music in Norman Public Schools, beginning at West Mid-High School where she earned Teacher of the Year, then moving to Norman High School where she directed four consistently superior-rated choirs. The Oklahoma Choral Directors Association honored her with the Director of Distinction Award in 2004.

With over 425 published choral octavos and two million copies in circulation, Drennan has established herself as one of today's most prolific sacred and secular composers. She has clinicked in 19 states plus Canada, adjudicated choral contests across the South, and served as music and worship arts director at First Baptist Church in Norman for nearly a decade. She continues composing, leading music reading sessions for publishers, and facilitating composer weekends for churches nationwide while collaborating musically with her daughter, a musical theater performer in New York City.

Why we love this

Drennan writes with the practical wisdom of someone who spent three decades in the rehearsal room, so every phrase sits naturally in the voices and every moment serves the text. Her sacred works carry genuine spiritual weight without demanding virtuosity, making them accessible to developing choirs while remaining musically substantial. This octavo delivers what working directors need: music that strengthens your singers' abilities while deepening their connection to the message.

What to expect

Reverent and clear, with harmonic language that feels both contemporary and timeless. The writing respects the dignity of the text while remaining singable and energizing for your ensemble.

Who it's for

Any director working with developing mixed ensembles who need quality sacred repertoire that's both musically rewarding and teachable. This works for church choirs seeking fresh repertoire, school choirs building their sacred catalog, and community groups wanting approachable but meaningful choral literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the three parts by thinking of SAB as three equal colors rather than soprano dominance. The alto and baritone lines carry important harmonic and textural responsibilities that deserve projection.
  • Let the text shape your phrasing instead of fighting it. Drennan's word setting is natural, so follow the language to find where the music breathes.
  • Consider the accompaniment as a support layer, not the foundation. Your voices should feel grounded in their own part writing first.

How to use it

Anchor a sacred concert with this piece, or pair it with other Drennan works for a unified stylistic program. It also serves beautifully in church services or chapel settings where you need music that communicates directly without drawing attention away from the meaning. The 10-page score suggests it has substance enough to carry a significant portion of your program.
