About the Composer: Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest has built a career around creating music that works in the real world of school bands. His compositions reach thousands of young musicians annually, and his pedagogical resources have become standards in ensemble classrooms across the country. In 2017, his orchestral work Cloud Gate drew over 5,000 listeners at Chicago's Millennium Park, and that year he received the Illinois Grade School Music Association's Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education. Since his first publication in 1995, Loest has partnered with major publishers including Warner Bros., C.L. Barnhouse, FJH Music, and MakeMusic, and founded Fanfare Music Press in 2022 to continue releasing compositions and arrangements at the highest standard.

Loest's reputation in instrumental pedagogy runs deep. He has spent more than three decades in the classroom and serves as an author on several widely adopted method series including Measures of Success®, Warm-ups and Beyond, Rhythms and Beyond, and Chorales and Beyond. His music has appeared on television programs ranging from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to Good Morning America. He holds degrees from Illinois State University and Northwestern University and maintains membership in ASCAP and the Illinois Grade School Music Association.

Why we love this

The structure here deserves attention. Rather than asking your tuba section to plow through generic long tone exercises, this method anchors fundamentals inside actual harmonic movement. The four-part chorale format means tuba players hear themselves as part of a vertical sonority, which builds intonation awareness faster than isolated exercises ever could. Kevin Lepper's percussion writing keeps the daily routine engaging and keeps other students invested during tuba warm-up time.

What to expect

Solid and purposeful. The chorales sit in accessible keys and move with clear harmonic direction, giving tuba players something to listen toward rather than something to merely execute. The percussion accompaniment adds warmth and keeps the routine from feeling isolated or overly mechanical.

Who it's for

Tuba players in middle school and high school concert bands who need a systematic daily warm-up anchored in real musical harmony, not disconnected technical patterns. Directors looking to strengthen intonation and fundamental tone quality without abandoning the practical realities of limited rehearsal time will find the structure of this book immediately useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Rotate through the three cycles within each key to maintain variety in the daily routine without abandoning the pedagogical work. This prevents the exercises from becoming rote while keeping focused progression.
  • Lean on the four-part harmony structure by occasionally running chorales with just the tuba part doubled, then add other voices. This reveals where intonation trouble actually lives.
  • Use the personal warm-ups section as a pre-ensemble touchstone. Five minutes of targeted breath and tone work before the full section joins sets the standard for sound quality.

How to use it

Open rehearsal three to four days a week with one cycle from the current key, rotating through the daily routine systematically. This creates a predictable warm-up framework that builds cumulative intonation control across the semester. Time the introduction of new keys to align with repertoire in those tonalities so students experience the connection between warm-up work and concert music.

Skills your students will build

  • Breath control and breath management across sustained passages
  • Long tone production with consistent vibration and tone quality
  • Pitch matching and intonation adjustment within harmonic contexts
  • Recognition and tuning of intervals and chord relationships
  • Scale and arpeggio fluency across all major and minor keys in the method
  • Reading four-part harmonic texture and identifying their voice's role in vertical sonority
  • Musical interpretation including tempo marking recognition and stylistic awareness
