More about this title

About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and later earned a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he subsequently taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career spans solo recitals across the United States and Mexico, including a performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra following his win of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, and a nationally broadcast solo recital from Ex-convento del Carman in Mexico.

Today, Martin channels his compositional energy into church music and settings for worship musicians, with his work performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to hundreds of congregations across North America. He continues to reside in Austin, Texas with his family, balancing active performance with a prolific output of original compositions and arrangements that showcase remarkable stylistic range.

Why we love this

Martin crafts a Nativity anthem that feels neither forced nor overly sentimental, striking the balance many directors struggle to find in Christmas repertoire. The memorable melody carries enough character to stick with singers and listeners alike, while the orchestration options let you shape the sound to match your ensemble's size and capabilities without sacrificing the cinematic sweep the piece promises.

What to expect

The piece unfolds with a sense of reverent anticipation, building from intimate moments to fuller, more luminous sections that capture the wonder of the Christmas story. Rich harmonic writing and instrumental texture create an almost cinematic quality, elevating the sacred narrative into something both timeless and contemporary.

Who it's for

This anthem serves choirs of moderate to advanced ability who want substantial seasonal material with real orchestral color. It suits churches seeking a Nativity centerpiece that combines accessibility for congregational appeal with musicianship that keeps singers engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal melody against the instrumental parts so the soaring line remains the focal point rather than getting buried in accompaniment texture.
  • Rehearse with the recorded track early to establish the harmonic context and phrasing that Martin's writing implies, even if you plan to perform with live instruments.
  • Pay attention to dynamic shaping throughout the piece; the anthem's effectiveness depends on strategic peaks and valleys rather than singing at one volume throughout.

How to use it

Position this as your Christmas service's main anthem or the climactic moment of a longer seasonal concert, letting its orchestral scope serve as the dramatic anchor for your program. It pairs well with smaller, more intimate pieces either before or after, creating dynamic contrast while maintaining a cohesive holiday celebration.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained melodic lines with rhythmic precision in ensemble texture
  • Blending voices in rich, dissonant harmonies without losing intonation
  • Coordinating with instrumental accompaniment while maintaining independent vocal lines
  • Interpreting dynamic and expressive nuance in sacred choral writing
