Why we love this

Gassi has a gift for writing thematic material that band students actually want to play. The balance of lively and lyrical moments keeps the ensemble engaged while building genuine musicality, and at Grade 3, the part writing sits comfortably across your sections without sacrificing compositional sophistication.

What to expect

Chariton Chronicles captures geographic character through a series of memorable melodies that feel both contemporary and rooted in place. The writing alternates between driving, energetic sections and reflective moments that showcase your ensemble's ability to sing through the band.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands seeking programming that satisfies both performance appeal and musical substance. This work suits competitive festival settings and conventional concert programming alike, offering conductors material that challenges students without requiring advanced technical facility.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the thematic statements so that lyrical passages don't lose shape or direction; younger bands often rush the slower material.
  • Attend to articulation consistency across sections during the inventive passages; rhythmic clarity will enhance the vibrancy Gassi builds into the work.
  • Use the three-and-a-half-minute timeline to shape a cohesive arc; plan where you want breath and energy shifts before rehearsal begins.

How to use it

This work functions effectively as a contest submission or as a concert centerpiece in a Grade 3 set. Its moderate length (3:35) and engaging character make it ideal for second-half programming, where it can bridge more demanding works and lighter selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing articulation patterns across moving tempos
  • Balancing thematic contrast between lyrical and energetic passages
  • Reading compound rhythmic figures across multiple voices
  • Maintaining ensemble tuning during full-band tutti sections
  • Shaping melodic phrasing in non-solo voices
