About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a major voice in contemporary band, orchestral, and chamber music composition. His works have been premiered and performed worldwide by ensembles ranging from professional orchestras to school groups, in halls including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, and the Toronto Centre for the Arts. He holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association and was honored with the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association; in 2020, he won the NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light.

Balmages received the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts and was later commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the presidential inauguration of Dr. Julio Frenk. His music was performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service attended by President Obama and Vice President Biden. As a guest conductor, he regularly appears with all-state, regional, university, and professional ensembles worldwide, including notable engagements at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and the College Band Directors Conference. He currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
