More about this title

About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan shaped choral music in Oklahoma schools for nearly three decades, directing programs at West Mid-High School and Norman High School that earned consistent superior ratings. Her teaching excellence earned her the Teacher of the Year award and later the Director of Distinction Award from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association in 2004.

Since retiring from the classroom, Drennan has become one of the most prolific choral composers in America, with more than two million copies of her work in circulation and over 425 octavos published by major houses. She remains active as a clinician, workshop presenter, and composer weekend director across the United States and Canada, and continues performing and recording with her daughter Emily, a musical theater performer in New York City.

Why we love this

Drennan understands exactly what SSA singers need to feel successful and energized. The piece balances accessibility with genuine artistry, giving your students a repertoire choice that sounds polished in performance while remaining straightforward to rehearse.

What to expect

This piece radiates warmth and purpose. The music captures what it means to gather and sing together, creating a sense of shared joy that resonates with both singers and audiences.

Who it's for

SSA and SSAA choirs looking for a genuinely uplifting piece that works equally well at concert, festival, or special occasion settings. The voicing and moderate difficulty level suit intermediate to advanced high school choirs and adult ensembles.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the text message. This piece celebrates music itself, so clarity of language matters as much as pitch accuracy.
  • Shape the phrasing across complete phrases rather than phrase by phrase. Let the musical line breathe as one sustained arc.
  • Balance the parts so that no single voice dominates. SSA voicing thrives when all three lines sit equally in the listener's ear.

How to use it

Close your spring concert with this or open a festival set with it. The inspirational quality makes it ideal for benefit concerts, fundraisers, or any program where you want to leave your audience feeling connected.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing three independent vocal lines without sacrificing blend
  • Shaping longer phrases with intentional dynamics
  • Connecting text expression to musical phrasing in a contemporary idiom
