More about this title

About the Arranger: Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke has spent more than five decades writing and arranging music specifically for worship and educational settings. His catalog encompasses hundreds of published works and recordings, and his compositions have become standards in churches and schools worldwide; The Majesty and Glory of Your Name alone is performed by thousands of choirs annually.

Fettke's deep understanding of what works in real ministry contexts comes from decades of firsthand experience. He taught vocal music in California public schools, served as a church music director for over 30 years, and shaped music education as Director of Choral Activities for the Redwood Christian School System. His editorial work on The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration and The Celebration Hymnal has influenced millions of worshippers since the 1980s. He holds degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward, along with a California Lifetime Music Credential in Secondary Music.

Why we love this

Fettke's gift for setting familiar melodies with fresh textual energy shines here. This arrangement transforms a beloved carol into something that feels both classic and contemporary, making it equally effective as a processional opener or a standalone celebration anthem without relying on novelty or oversimplification.

What to expect

Vibrant and affirming, with the warmth of a carol you already know anchored by Fettke's modern harmonic language. The piece radiates celebration without saccharine sentimentality, inviting both singers and listeners into genuine joy.

Who it's for

Choirs and orchestras serving churches during the Christmas season, whether you're leading a formal liturgical service, a Hanging of the Greens observance, or a festive concert setting. This works equally well for school choirs with instrumental accompaniment who want something spiritually grounded yet accessible.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text clarity in your choir against any orchestral doubling; Fettke's lyrics deserve to land clearly, so sculpt dynamics so voices remain audible through the accompaniment.
  • The three-minute duration means pacing is essential. Find a tempo that feels celebratory but not rushed, giving the text room to breathe while maintaining forward motion.
  • If you're using this as an introit, plan your entry and exit carefully. The piece's energy makes it a strong opening statement, so consider how you'll transition into your service flow.
  • Engage your orchestra players in the text's meaning, even instrumentally. Their sense of the message will inform articulation, phrasing, and overall character.

How to use it

Open your Christmas service or concert with this as an introit to establish a celebratory tone immediately. It also works beautifully as a standalone anthem within a longer program, giving you a strong, confident statement that feels complete in itself.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing familiar melodic material within contemporary harmonic contexts
  • Text projection and clarity in an accompanied choir setting
  • Ensemble coordination with orchestral instruments
  • Stylistic interpretation of sacred choral repertoire with modern sensibilities
