About the Composer: Mark Williams

Mark Williams built a prolific career as a composer and educator deeply embedded in the American school band tradition. A Chicago native who spent his formative years in Spokane, Washington, he earned degrees from Eastern Washington University and devoted decades to teaching elementary band while simultaneously composing over 200 works for school ensembles. His arrangements and original compositions earned recognition from ASCAP and the Western International Band Clinic's Gralia Competition, and he served as a clinician and guest conductor across 34 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia.

Beyond the page, Williams was an accomplished bassoon performer who held principal positions with the Spokane British Brass Band, where he also served as conductor and artistic director. His impact on music education extends through the Accent on Achievement Band Method, which he co-authored and which shaped instrumental instruction in countless schools. His understanding of what young musicians need—achievable technical challenges, musical satisfaction, and pieces worth playing—permeates every score he wrote.
