About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell discovered composition through literature and accompaniment work in high school, long before he formally studied the craft in college. After graduating from East Carolina University, he returned to teaching and composing simultaneously, building a catalog that now exceeds 60 published collections and solos. His breakthrough came in the early 1980s when mentor Lynn Freeman Olson encouraged him to submit work to publishers; Alfred published his debut series, Something Special, in 1990.

Today Hartsell remains active in Charlotte, North Carolina as a teacher, composer, accompanist, soloist, clinician, adjudicator, and church organist/conductor. His signature approach to melodic writing consistently motivates students across all levels and ages, drawing inspiration from the literature and experiences he encounters in his many roles.

Why we love this

Hartsell's gift for memorable, expressive melody makes these solos genuinely rewarding to perform. The harmonies breathe naturally beneath the lines without overwhelming intermediate players, and the dynamic contrasts give students real interpretive choices. Each piece earns its place in the recital without requiring virtuosic technique.

What to expect

These solos transport you somewhere warm and inviting. The melodies flow with the ease of island breezes, supported by harmonies that suggest lush landscapes and the gentle motion of Caribbean light. You play with your imagination as much as your hands.

Who it's for

Intermediate piano students ready to explore expressive playing and harmonic depth without excessive technical demands. Teachers seeking recital material that motivates students through beautiful, singable lines rather than virtuosity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening phrases deliberately; the lyrical quality depends on careful attention to how long notes breathe and where you allow the melody to rest.
  • Use the full range of dynamics marked in the score. Moving from the softest passages to full sound and back again creates the tropical atmosphere these pieces evoke.
  • Listen to how the harmonies support each melodic idea. When you hear the chord changes, your phrasing will deepen naturally.
  • Let the rich harmonic textures sustain without rushing. These solos reward patience in the accompaniment figures.

How to use it

Perfect for spring or end-of-year recitals when students benefit from accessible, mood-setting repertoire that still challenges musicality. The collection allows you to program multiple pieces from one book, creating a cohesive thematic set for different students.

Skills your students will build

  • Expressive phrasing and shaping of lyrical melodies
  • Dynamic contrast and control across a wider range
  • Harmonic awareness and listening for chord movement
  • Sustaining interest in music without rapid technical passage work
