Irving Mills was a prolific lyricist, composer, and music publisher who shaped the sound of American jazz during the 1920s and 1930s. Though often working behind the scenes, Mills co-wrote some of Duke Ellington's most enduring standards, including "Mood Indigo" and "Caravan," and his business acumen helped bring Ellington's music to wider audiences through recordings and film.

Mills understood how to craft lyrics and melodies that served the ensemble while leaving space for improvisation and arrangement innovation.
