About the Composer: Bruce Preuninger

Bruce Preuninger

Bruce Preuninger earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Eastern Washington University and later completed a Master of Arts in Administration and Curriculum at Gonzaga University, focusing on K-12 music curriculum development. He spent 36 years teaching instrumental music in public schools, beginning in Bellevue, Washington and continuing in the East Valley School District near Spokane.

Preuninger retired from full-time classroom teaching in 2005 after a career dedicated to building strong instrumental programs. His compositions for band have appeared on Alfred's catalog since 1999 and regularly appear on state and international festival and contest lists, reflecting his deep understanding of what works in the rehearsal room.

Why we love this

Preuninger built this overture on a straightforward formal blueprint that feels complete and satisfying without overstaying its welcome. The piece gives your ensemble an immediate win: the opening is bold enough to command attention, the middle section offers genuine musical contrast, and the return home feels earned rather than recycled.

What to expect

Canyon Creek Overture opens with energy and presence, then settles into a stately, dignified theme that feels grounded and purposeful. The middle section invites the listener into a more intimate space before the ensemble regathers for a triumphant, optimistic close.

Who it's for

Band directors working with Grade 2 ensembles who want a concert piece that builds confidence without demanding advanced technical facility. This overture suits students ready to handle moderate rhythmic variety and sustained ensemble playing but still developing independence and tone control.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the full opening sonority carefully so that no single voice overwhelms the ensemble; the effect depends on blend rather than volume.
  • Shape the A theme with clear phrasing that lets the melody breathe between phrases; avoid driving through the natural resting points.
  • Contrast the B section's delicate texture with the robust opening by pulling back the dynamic and encouraging lighter articulation across the band.
  • Approach the final coda with building momentum and confidence; the return to full texture should feel like a natural resolution, not an abrupt shift.

How to use it

Open a concert with this piece to establish a polished, professional tone from the first notes. It pairs well with lyrical slow selections and lighter character pieces, giving the program clear contrast and forward momentum.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble blend and balanced voicing across the full band
  • Dynamic contrast and controlled crescendo/decrescendo
  • Phrasing and musical shape within a traditional formal structure
  • Sustained intonation during full-band passages
