More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works now in circulation. His output spans secular and sacred repertoire, children's musicals, and vocal pedagogical resources including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. His music reaches singers across the globe, as evidenced by countless YouTube performances.

Beyond the page, Beck is an active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for music educators and students nationwide and internationally. He has served as commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs, including all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast. A trained tenor with a Bachelor's degree from Ithaca College and a Master's degree from Northwest Missouri State University, Beck performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and brings decades of experience as an Alfred Music studio singer. His dual commitment to choral artistry and music literacy shapes every resource he develops.

Why we love this

Beck's winter choral writing balances accessibility with genuine musical substance, making this a piece your singers will actually enjoy learning. The recorded accompaniment option removes the barrier of finding a capable accompanist during the holiday season rush, letting you focus on shaping the vocal lines and addressing the specific needs of your ensemble.

What to expect

Candlelight Canon carries the quiet warmth and gentle reflection of a winter evening. The piece invites singers and listeners into an intimate musical moment, balancing festive celebration with sincere reverence.

Who it's for

Choirs of all levels seeking a seasonal work that works equally well in concert settings or informal holiday events. The combination of melodic accessibility and recorded accompaniment support makes it suitable for community choirs, church ensembles, and school choirs looking to add a polished winter selection without extensive accompanist rehearsal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish tempo and harmonic clarity in early rehearsals; once your singers are secure with the melody, remove the recording and sing with piano alone to build independence.
  • Shape phrases through dynamic contrast rather than rushing; allow the text to guide your phrasing choices and let the harmony breathe.
  • Balance the blend between parts by asking singers to listen across the ensemble rather than focusing inward on their own line.

How to use it

Place this in the middle section of a holiday concert to shift the emotional temperature after more spirited opening selections. It also works beautifully in services of lessons and carols or as a community event piece where both musical polish and approachability matter.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in canon form and tracking independent voice lines
  • Maintaining musical independence while listening to other parts
  • Phrasing with text awareness and dynamic shape
  • Blending with accompaniment from a recorded source
