About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's influence extends across choral music in more than 45 states and internationally, from Canada to Australia to Sweden, Italy, Spain, and Germany. He holds degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and earned his DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. His teaching blends sharp wit with genuine musical depth, delivered in a way that energizes every room he enters.

Shaw's compositional catalog exceeds 2500 pieces, which have circulated globally and sold nearly 20 million copies. He founded the celebrated COS Vocal Jazz Ensemble at College of the Siskiyous and later directed similar programs at Colorado State University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. A collaborator with jazz vocalists including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, and Al Jarreau, Shaw currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University and serves as a member of Just 4 Kicks, a jazz a cappella ensemble. His work has earned multiple ASCAP awards and includes commissions for ensembles such as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Why we love this

Shaw brings a genuine gift for melody and voicing accessibility to beloved material, and this arrangement proves it. Young male singers get to inhabit a song that matters to them culturally and emotionally without encountering vocal gymnastics that derail the performance. The flexible voicing scheme (TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB) means you can use this whether your tenor section is robust or you're building it up.

What to expect

Candlelit and hopeful. The melody floats over gentle harmonic support, creating an intimate quality that invites the listener in rather than demanding attention. There's a reassuring quality built into the writing, fitting the song's original message of steadfast light in darkness.

Who it's for

Male and mixed male voice choirs looking for accessible material that resonates with singers and audiences alike. The flexible voicing works equally well for church choirs, school groups, and community ensembles with varying tenor and bass depth.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening carefully; the simplicity of the voicing invites a tender dynamic, so establish a warm, supported sound from measure one without oversinging.
  • Keep the harmonic movement deliberate and clear. Since the arrangement doesn't obscure the melody with complexity, any imprecision in chord changes becomes audible, so lock vertical alignment in sectional rehearsals.
  • Treat the text with genuine reverence. The metaphor of the candle carries weight, and singers who understand the emotional arc (hope, reassurance, guidance) will deliver it authentically.

How to use it

Program this as a concert closer when you want to leave the audience with something tender and resonant. It works beautifully alongside more rigorous repertoire as a palate cleanser, or use it as a building block to introduce younger singers to four-part writing without overwhelming them.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained melodic lines with consistent breath support and phrase clarity
  • Reading and balancing four-part TTBB voicing with flexibility across voice arrangements
  • Intonation control in close harmonic progressions
  • Text expression and emotional communication in a cappella singing
  • Ensemble blend and vertical chord alignment
