Description
Driving syncopation and woodwind flourishes will transform your next concert into a festival! A rhythmic showpiece for your whole band, Doug Akey's Canarios Fantasia makes tremendous use of the trumpet and percussion sections which supply the driving pulses throughout the work. A flowing melody provides a brief contrast about two-thirds in, only to be overtaken by the exciting "Vivo" section that drives Canarios Fantasia home. A spectacular finish to any concert! About the Composer: Douglas Akey

Douglas Akey

Douglas Akey earned both his bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music and master's degree in Solo Performance from Arizona State University, where he studied on a performance scholarship. For over three decades, he has served as Director of Bands and Music Department Chair at Hendrix Junior High School in Chandler, Arizona, establishing himself as a central figure in Phoenix-area music education. His compositions have earned recognition across state contest circuits and international stages, and his contributions to the profession have been acknowledged with the Stanbury Award from the American School Band Directors Association and the National Federation of Secondary Schools Music Educator of the Year Award.

Why we love this

Akey writes for the ensemble he knows best, and it shows. The percussion and brass writing here demands precision but rewards careful attention with genuinely exciting musical moments. This is the kind of piece that makes students sit up straighter during rehearsal because they can hear exactly what they're contributing to the whole.

What to expect

A piece that builds from steady, syncopated momentum into brief moments of lyrical breathing before launching into a driving finale. There's joy in the rhythmic propulsion here, and the orchestration lets multiple sections shine in turn, creating a sense of celebration rather than solo heroics.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 4 level looking for repertoire with genuine rhythmic energy and accessible but sophisticated arranging. Directors programming festivals or concerts who want a finale piece that showcases what an ensemble can do when the whole band plays as one unit.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the syncopated rhythms crisp and together; the trumpet section sets the heartbeat of this work, so lock their phrasing before moving to full ensemble.
  • The "Vivo" section needs real momentum. Build toward it from the flowing melody section rather than treating it as a sudden shift.
  • Balance the woodwind flourishes carefully so they sparkle without overwhelming the rhythmic foundation underneath.

How to use it

Save this for your second half or closer when the audience is engaged and your band is warmed up. Its energy and rhythmic drive make it an ideal bridge between a slower ballad and an even bigger finale, or a spectacular standalone showcase for a festival setting.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing consistent syncopated rhythms across multiple sections
  • Balancing independence in rhythmic parts with ensemble cohesion
  • Phrasing in fast tempos without losing clarity
  • Blending woodwind and brass in passages where both colors are active
