About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Butler University. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before committing himself fully to composition in the 1970s.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 compositions across nearly every medium: choir, concert band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, and solo voice. His work has reached an estimated audience of seventeen million performers and listeners worldwide, with performances documented in concert halls, on television, and in radio broadcasts across the United States and internationally. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner's gift for crafting memorable, singable melodies shines in the chorus here, and the syncopated rhythms keep energy high without requiring a varsity ensemble to pull off. Pairing the full orchestration with celebratory subject matter gives your singers genuine excitement about what they're performing, making rehearsals feel collaborative rather than technical.

What to expect

Infectious energy and holiday joy. The syncopated rhythms propel the piece forward with a contemporary feel, while the straightforward Christmas theme and catchy chorus make it instantly engaging for both performers and audiences. It strikes that rare balance between fun and musically satisfying.

Who it's for

This is built for school and community choirs seeking a show-stopper with genuine appeal. The accessible vocal writing accommodates mixed-ability ensembles while the novelty treatment and orchestral arrangement give it the impact of a larger production number.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the syncopation early. Have the choir mark the rhythm on their knees before adding words, so the pocket feels instinctive rather than fought.
  • Balance the SoundPax instrumentation so the ensemble can hear the harmonic support without the band overpowering the vocal line. A soundcheck before dress rehearsal is essential.
  • Commit fully to the festive character. This piece thrives on uninhibited energy; reserve any restraint for the ballads on your program.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsals to solidify entrances and keep tempo consistent, especially during syncopated section transitions.

How to use it

Place this as a second-half opener or closer to capitalize on its high-octane momentum and lift audience mood after heavier or quieter selections. The full orchestration and novelty treatment make it an ideal anchor for a holiday concert's secular section.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading syncopated rhythms in a choral context
  • Blending with instrumental accompaniment and responding to ensemble balance
  • Sustaining energy and ensemble cohesion through rhythmically complex sections
  • Performing with stylistic confidence and character awareness
