About the Composer: Katie O'Hara Labrie

Katie O'Hara Labrie

Katie O'Hara Labrie is a composer, conductor, clinician, and cellist based in Northern Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from St. Olaf College and her Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. Her early career centered on teaching orchestra in Fairfax County schools, an experience that shaped her compositional philosophy and remains central to her work today.

LaBrie's compositions draw inspiration from family, nature, and above all from her years in the classroom. She prioritizes music that is pedagogically sound, audience-friendly, and genuinely enjoyable for players to perform. Her work has earned frequent J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice recognition and performances at major conferences including the Midwest Band and Orchestra Directors Clinic and the American String Teachers Association Conference. In 2022, Yamaha honored her as one of their "40 Under 40" for her impact and innovation in music education. She is the founding conductor of the Fairfax Chamber Players and co-creator of "the Big IDEA" practice method.

Why we love this

The flexible instrumentation system removes the guesswork from casting. You purchase once and adjust parts freely to match your actual ensemble, whether you're running two violins or a full section spread. The medieval narrative makes every player feel like a protagonist rather than a bit part, and the contrast between driving marcato ostinatos and soaring legato melodies keeps both performers and audiences engaged throughout the arc of the piece.

What to expect

A swashbuckling journey through a medieval landscape. Sharp articulations and driving rhythms propel the action forward, while singing melodies give the protagonists moments to soar. The piece balances heroic energy with accessible writing, making every player feel capable and important.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the early intermediate level (Grade 1.5) who want a program piece with narrative appeal and genuine musical substance. Directors working with mixed-size ensembles will especially appreciate the flexible instrumentation, which solves casting challenges without requiring multiple purchases or arrangements.

How to get the most out of it

  • Isolate the dotted-quarter rhythms in rehearsal before layering them with the ostinato patterns. Have students clap the rhythm independently, then add bow strokes once the pulse is secure.
  • Balance the marcato ostinatos so they sit under the legato melodies without overpowering them. This interplay between the two textures is what makes the piece's medieval energy work.
  • Shape the "joust-like battle" climax with gradual dynamic growth. Build intensity through tempo push and articulation clarity rather than immediately jumping to full volume.
  • If using optional percussion, rehearse it separately until the players are confident, then integrate it gradually into full ensemble runs. The medieval flair should enhance, not distract from, the string writing.

How to use it

Program this as the centerpiece of a concert featuring other narrative or descriptive works, or use it as a festival selection where its medieval theme stands out on a varied schedule. Its 2:45 duration and confident Grade 1.5 scoring make it ideal for a late winter or spring concert when students have developed solid rhythmic precision.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading accidentals (D-sharp) in first position across multiple string instruments
  • Executing dotted-quarter note rhythms in ensemble contexts
  • Contrasting marcato and legato articulations within the same piece
  • Playing flexible parts transposed into multiple string instrument ranges
  • Building dynamic shape and intensity through a longer form structure
