About the Arranger: Robert DeCormier

Robert DeCormier

Robert DeCormier studied at Juilliard and built a career spanning classical conducting, Broadway, and folk music. He served as music director of the New York Choral Society for seventeen years, worked as conductor and arranger with Harry Belafonte, and held the position of music director for Peter, Paul and Mary from 1978 to 2010. His teaching credits include an associate professorship at the Eastman School of Music from 1972 to 1977.

Beyond the concert hall, DeCormier founded the professional vocal ensemble Counterpoint in 2000, which recorded six albums and conducted workshops with high school choirs throughout New England and beyond. His extensive arrangement work encompasses African-American spirituals, American folk songs, and international repertoire. Recognition for his contributions includes the Vermont Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts (2002) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Choral Arts Foundation (2006).

Why we love this

DeCormier's deep expertise with spirituals and folk traditions shines through in this arrangement. His years conducting professional choirs and mentoring high school ensembles gave him an ear for what works on the voice and what moves an audience. The writing balances accessibility with genuine emotional depth, making it rewarding for singers at varying experience levels.

What to expect

This spiritual carries warmth and forward momentum alongside a quiet dignity. The text and melody invite singers into a space of hope and reflection, while DeCormier's harmonic support deepens the emotional resonance without ever feeling heavy or overly arranged.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves SSA or SSAA choirs seeking repertoire that honors the spiritual tradition while remaining performable at the high school and community choir level. It works equally well for programs that need authentic, respectfully arranged sacred music and for directors looking to deepen their singers' connection to American musical heritage.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the spiritual's roots by allowing natural phrasing over rigid beat-keeping; the text should guide the breath and shape of each phrase.
  • Work the SSA voicing as a unified ensemble first, then add subtle blend adjustments to let each part register without forcing.
  • Let the harmonic language breathe. DeCormier's arrangements often feature rich, unexpected chord changes that deserve space and clarity in rehearsal.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals or American folk songs to build a concert that celebrates a particular tradition, or nestle it into a sacred music program where its gentle strength will complement larger choral works. It also makes a memorable closer for a set focused on hope or resilience.
