About the Composer: Chris Sharp

Chris Sharp holds a doctorate and brings three decades of professional experience to his compositions and arrangements. As a trombonist and bandleader at Walt Disney World for eleven years, he developed a keen ear for what engages listeners; his work as arranger and orchestrator for Disney parks worldwide since 1984 has shaped his instinct for color, momentum, and narrative arc in music.
Now Director of Bands at Polk State College, Dr. Sharp teaches theory, technology, and arranging while maintaining an active composing practice. He has adjudicated for Bands of America and Drum Corps International, received multiple ASCAP Plus awards, and regularly appears at the Midwest Clinic. His concert and jazz band works have become staples in school and university programs across the country.
Why we love this
Sharp crafts a three-act narrative that keeps students and audiences invested without demanding advanced technical chops. The opening romp establishes character immediately, the lyrical midsection gives you breathing room and showcases your musicians' ability to shape a melody, and the storm finale delivers genuine drama through orchestration and percussion color rather than sheer instrumental difficulty. It's exactly the kind of Grade 3 piece that feels substantial in performance.
What to expect
A swashbuckling adventure that moves between carefree abandon and introspection. You'll feel the salt spray during the opening dance, sink into the calm of a tropical island, then brace yourself as storms roll in. The music captures both the lightness of folk tradition and the drama of nature's fury.
Who it's for
Grade 3 concert bands preparing for festivals or looking for a genuinely entertaining contest selection that tells a story. Directors who want their students to develop interpretive maturity without programming above their reading level will find the balance here rewarding.
How to get the most out of it
- Establish a clear tempo relationship between the Pirate Life theme and Island Idyll; the lyrical section needs room to breathe, but not so much that you lose the piece's narrative momentum.
- The beach towel effects during Wrath of Triton are optional but worth rehearsing if you have confident percussionists. Even a single well-placed snap adds theatrical texture and engages your audience.
- Balance the harmonic richness of Island Idyll by bringing out inner voices; the woodwind countermelodies matter as much as the main tune.
- Push the rhythmic energy of the opening section. Pirate Life thrives on forward motion and character, not precision alone.
How to use it
Program this as a standalone contest piece or as the centerpiece of a concert themed around storytelling and character. Its three-movement arc works equally well as an intermission closer or a mid-program energy shift that sets up something more serious. The manageable length and clear narrative also make it effective for adjudicated festivals where you want to showcase musicality and ensemble cohesion.
Skills your students will build

- Balancing harmonic complexity in lyrical contexts
- Coordinating rhythmic precision in syncopated, dance-oriented sections
