Kirby Shaw's influence across music education spans continents and decades. A San Jose State University graduate in Music Education and Choral Composition, he earned his DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington and has conducted workshops and clinics in 45 states plus Canada, Australia, Scandinavia, and Europe. His teaching combines rigorous musicianship with infectious humor, a quality he demonstrated while learning directly from legends like Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks.
Shaw's compositional legacy stands at over 2,500 published works, with his arrangements and original pieces reaching nearly 20 million singers worldwide. He founded and directed acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at the College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. His prolific output has earned multiple ASCAP awards, and his recent commission from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir reflects his standing in choral music. When not composing or arranging, Shaw performs with Just 4 Kicks, a jazz a cappella ensemble, and co-wrote the musical Scroogical with his wife, Markita.
