Why we love this
Drennan's arrangement honors this beloved hymn with clarity and accessibility while respecting its spiritual weight. An experienced choral educator knows exactly how to write for singers across levels, and this octavo reflects decades of classroom wisdom about what works in rehearsal and what moves an audience.
What to expect
There is warmth and gathering in this arrangement, the feeling of voices joining for common purpose. The harmonic language is rooted and stable, supporting singers with clear progressions while maintaining the hymn's inherent dignity.
Who it's for
Choirs with solid foundation skills and comfort singing in four parts. This works equally well for church choirs, school concert programs, and community ensembles seeking meaningful, accessible sacred repertoire.
How to get the most out of it
Shape the phrases with breath, not just line breaks. Let the text's meaning guide your phrasing rather than filling every bar.
Find the natural lift in each melodic arc. This hymn rewards singers who think in long lines rather than measure-by-measure.
Balance the voices so the text remains the foreground. Sacred arrangements live or die on clarity of the words.
How to use it
Consider pairing this with other hymn arrangements to create a concert section rooted in spiritual tradition, or position it as a closing statement that resonates with both singers and listeners. The piece carries enough musical substance to anchor a program without demanding extensive rehearsal.
