Why we love this

Kinyon and Anzalone designed this method for real classroom constraints, balancing individual progress with group instruction needs. The pedagogical sequencing reflects decades of teaching experience, moving students through fundamentals without overwhelming them. You'll find the pacing allows struggling players to catch up while keeping advanced students engaged.

What to expect

Straightforward and encouraging. Each page unfolds logically, introducing new concepts one small step at a time so students feel capable rather than lost. The melodies are simple but musical, giving beginners the satisfaction of playing actual music from early pages.

Who it's for

Beginning trumpet and cornet players in school band settings, whether working individually with a teacher or in group instruction. This book serves students starting their brass journey with little to no prior musical experience, providing the structured fundamentals needed to build solid playing habits from the first lesson.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish consistent embouchure formation exercises before tackling the first exercises; revisit these fundamentals regularly throughout the book rather than assuming they're locked in after the opening pages.
  • Isolate rhythm patterns in exercises before adding melodic content; tap the rhythm duets silently or with the class, then add the trumpet sound once the coordination is secure.
  • Use the duet arrangements as opportunity for peer listening; having one student play while others listen encourages awareness of balance, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy.
  • Record short passages from early lessons and play them back so students hear their own progress; this builds confidence and highlights specific areas needing refinement.

How to use it

Use this as your core method book for a beginning trumpet section in a school band program, working sequentially from fall through spring. Complement standard ensemble rehearsals with individual or sectional lessons using Breeze-Easy, then have students apply what they've learned when they join full-band pieces at comparable difficulty levels.

Skills your students will build

  • Proper embouchure formation and breath support
  • Fingering patterns for B-flat trumpet in first and second positions
  • Rhythmic reading in simple and compound meters
  • Tone production and intonation fundamentals
  • Sight-reading in treble clef
  • Ensemble listening and balance in duet playing
