More about this title

About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. His professional experience includes eight years as a rights and licenses administrator for a major educational music publisher, where he also served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, he has created more than 800 choral works performed widely across the English-speaking world and maintains membership in ASCAP, regularly receiving their Special Award for compositions in standard music.

Beyond composition, Althouse has collaborated with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on multiple children's musicals and co-authored influential classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. He compiled and arranged respected vocal solo collections, contributed to the widely used I Hear America Singing (performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration), and authored reproducible music education materials. Based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, he has served the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently sits on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse's distinctive gift for spiritual texts is evident in how he pairs accessible harmonic language with genuine emotional depth, never sacrificing authenticity for ease. The PianoTrax format gives your singers a secure harmonic anchor while keeping the score clean and transparent, making this a dependable choice for singers who need support without distraction.

What to expect

The piece carries the contemplative warmth characteristic of American spirituals, grounded by Althouse's skill at setting text that resonates without overcomplicating the musical texture. The voicing sits comfortably for singers while maintaining the gentle dignity the genre deserves.

Who it's for

SATB choirs seeking a spiritual with approachable harmonies and a secure harmonic reference. This works well for choirs building confidence in four-part writing or those who benefit from the stability of an accompaniment track during performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the piano track establish the harmonic foundation in early rehearsals; singers can mark the melodic line independently before joining with the full voicing.
  • Balance the parts so the text emerges clearly; the spiritual genre depends on listeners hearing the message, not impressive technical display.
  • Shape phrases through dynamic softness rather than sudden volume drops, which suits the meditative quality typical of this genre.

How to use it

Include this in a concert program centered on American sacred music or pair it with other spirituals to create a thematic set. It also serves well as a concert closer, where the text and Althouse's restrained approach can settle into the room without competition from more elaborate pieces.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing SATB harmony with clear part independence
  • Interpreting spiritual idiom and text expression
  • Listening to and balancing with harmonic accompaniment
  • Sustaining legit tone appropriate to sacred repertoire
