About the Composer: Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo spent 31 years as Director of Bands and Chairman of the Performing Arts Department at Carmel High School in Indiana, building a program that earned state, regional, and national recognition across concert, jazz, and marching categories. His ensembles achieved remarkable success, including three appearances at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival and back-to-back BOA National Championships in 2005 and 2012. In 2015 and 2022, he was inducted into the Music for All Hall of Fame and Drum Corps International Hall of Fame respectively, and received Indiana's "Bandmaster of the Year" award in 1998-99.

Beyond his directing work, Saucedo maintains an active career as a freelance arranger and composer for marching bands, choral groups, concert bands, and orchestras. He served as Brass Arranger and Composer for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, contributing to five DCI world championships, and continues as the music ensemble coordinator for the Blue Devils. As a Senior Educational Consultant for Music for All and Bands of America and a Chief Judge Team Leader for Bands of America competitions, he remains deeply invested in music education.

Why we love this

Saucedo knows exactly how to write music that lands with both performers and audiences. The percussion feature moments give your section players genuine shine without demanding virtuosity, while the visual and vocal effects create that rare combination of genuine humor and musical legitimacy. At Grade 1.5, this works as a full program opener or closer without requiring extensive rehearsal time.

What to expect

The energy of a toy shop, playful and slightly absurd. Bobblehead dolls are inherently ridiculous, and the music meets that spirit with clever touches and a bouncy character that keeps everyone grinning from rehearsal through performance.

Who it's for

Beginning and early intermediate concert bands looking for a crowd-pleasing opener or closer that genuinely engages players. This works for groups still building confidence in reading and ensemble balance, as the straightforward Grade 1.5 difficulty keeps the focus on fun rather than technical struggle.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the character moments with percussion. The timpani and xylophone breaks are designed to land comedically, so encourage clarity and personality rather than precision-at-all-costs playing.
  • Coordinate your visual cues with the woodwinds on the vocal effects. These moments work best when they feel collectively playful, so rehearse the ensemble's physical response alongside the sound.
  • Use the two-minute duration strategically. This piece builds energy quickly, so establish a clean tempo from measure one and resist the temptation to rush the novelty moments.

How to use it

Open a spring or fall concert with this to set a celebratory tone, or use it as your finale to send the audience out happy. The novelty approach also makes it an excellent choice for pep rallies, community events, or any program where you need to break up a series of more serious works.

Skills your students will build

  • Balance between melodic and rhythmic sections with light textures
  • Ensemble coordination on stylized articulation and rhythmic precision
  • Performance confidence through playful, character-driven music
  • Listening for percussion features within a fuller band texture
  • Reading and executing simple visual cues that enhance musical storytelling
