About the Composer: Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante grew up in Buffalo, New York, and trained as a trumpet player at SUNY Buffalo, earning his Bachelor of Arts in 1992. That same year, he was one of nineteen applicants worldwide selected for the University of Southern California's Film Scoring Program, where he studied composition under Jerry Goldsmith, the Academy Award-winning composer of The Omen.

Why we love this

Galante brings the harmonic sophistication and orchestral sensibility of his film work to the concert band idiom. The piece balances accessibility at Grade 4 with genuine compositional craft, offering students music that sounds and feels professional without requiring virtuosic technical demands. Majestic brass writing and lyrical melodic material create a program work that audiences recognize as substantial.

What to expect

Sweeping and cinematic, with the grandeur of a musical vista unfolding before you. The brass fanfares evoke majesty and aspiration, while the lyrical themes create moments of reflection and beauty. The overall arc feels expansive and purposeful.

Who it's for

Conductors seeking a Grade 4 work that programs well at festivals and concerts alike. This score works for bands with solid fundamentals looking to perform music with genuine compositional depth and broad appeal to audiences.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the brass fanfares with attention to dynamic contour; allow the majestic opening to breathe rather than rushing the phrasing.
  • Balance the two contrasting themes carefully so that melodic lines sing through the full band texture without one theme overwhelming the other.
  • Use ensemble blend exercises before rehearsals to ensure the sweeping melodic sections maintain tonal unity across all sections.
  • Mark clear sectional breakthroughs in your score so you can signal transitions between thematic material with confidence during performance.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece concert work or festival selection where you want to showcase your band's ability to balance technical cleanliness with musical storytelling. At 5 minutes 35 seconds, it anchors a program without overshadowing lighter or more virtuosic pieces.

Skills your students will build

  • Dynamic shaping and phrasing across extended melodic lines
  • Brass section balance and blend in fanfare writing
  • Ensemble cohesion in thicker, fuller textures
  • Interpretation of programmatic intent (landscape imagery in musical form)
