About the Composer: Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest has composed over 200 piano works spanning from early elementary through advanced levels. Her catalog includes the widely performed Banff Panorama Suite, and her contributions to music education have earned her recognition in multiple editions of Who's Who, as well as the Special Individual Merit Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs (1971-1977).

Demarest's compositions draw deeply from her extensive travels across Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. A pianist, composer, and published poet, she has performed recitals internationally and maintains active membership in the Society of Colorado Composers, National Music Teachers Association, and other professional music organizations.

Why we love this

Demarest captures the playful mischief of Halloween in a piece that stays musically grounded without relying on novelty effects. The early intermediate level sits in that sweet spot where students can handle genuine compositional ideas and character work without drowning in technical complexity, making this an ideal fall recital or studio program opener.

What to expect

The piece conjures a playful, slightly mysterious atmosphere that feels intentional rather than spooky-for-spooky's-sake. Harmonic shifts and rhythmic choices create an engaging sense of something slightly off-kilter, inviting the pianist to inhabit the character fully.

Who it's for

This piece works beautifully for early intermediate pianists in private studio settings or group lessons who want to explore character and mood at their level. It gives students a chance to work on interpretive choices and thematic development without requiring advanced technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic character that defines the "bewitching" mood. Precision in articulation and timing will make the harmonic surprises land.
  • Explore the dynamic range within phrases rather than playing uniformly. Demarest builds tension and release intentionally throughout.
  • Listen closely for any tonal ambiguity or color shifts in the harmony that reinforce the witchy atmosphere without becoming cartoonish.

How to use it

Program this as an opening or interlude in a fall recital, or pair it with other seasonal work by Demarest to showcase her gift for narrative piano writing. It works equally well as a feature piece in a studio Halloween gathering or as a standalone selection for students exploring seasonal repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Characterization and mood setting through articulation and dynamics
  • Harmonic awareness and voice leading in non-functional harmony
  • Phrasing and structural understanding across four pages
  • Balance between left and right hand when melody and accompaniment are distributed across the staff
