Why we love this

Althouse crafts this spiritual with genuine rhythmic vitality while maintaining the intimate vulnerability that makes a cappella singing powerful. The middle section's quotation of "Go, Tell It on the Mountain" adds a layer of musical familiarity that audiences recognize instantly, creating an unexpected moment of connection without feeling derivative. The optional bongo accompaniment, solo lines, and descant give you flexible instrumentation and voicing choices to match your ensemble's strengths.

What to expect

The piece radiates the rhythmic drive and spiritual warmth of a traditional spiritual while maintaining Althouse's gift for clear, singable lines. The contrasting middle section feels like a moment of reflection and prayer, quieter and more introspective, before the excitement and forward motion return.

Who it's for

Church choirs seeking seasonal repertoire that balances accessibility with musical substance will find genuine value here. This work also suits concert choirs and festival groups looking for a spiritually grounded piece that doesn't require instrumental accompaniment but can stand stronger with optional percussion.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the descant carefully in the upper voices; it should shimmer without overwhelming the main melodic line. Have sopranos mark their dynamic plan during early rehearsals.
  • Treat the contrasting middle section as a moment to reset the ensemble's sound and approach. Slow the tempo slightly if needed to ensure the "Go, Tell It on the Mountain" quotation lands clearly.
  • If adding optional bongo drums, rehearse them independently first so the drummer becomes comfortable with the rhythmic framework before layering them into full choir rehearsals.
  • Shape the return to the opening section with renewed energy. The piece builds toward this moment, so the a cappella voices need to sound fresher and more confident after the middle section settles.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece in a Christmas concert, or pair it with other spirituals and seasonal works to build a thematic second half. The optional solos and descant make it flexible enough to showcase multiple singers, and the optional bongo part can expand your instrumental resources without requiring a full orchestration.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing a cappella with secure intonation across SATB voicing
  • Balancing optional solos and descant lines with main melody
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity in spiritually-inflected material
  • Negotiating contrasting sections and managing tempo shifts
  • Coordinating with optional percussion accompaniment
