About the Composer: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings both deep classroom experience and prolific compositional output to his work with young musicians. He holds degrees through the doctoral level in music education and spent two decades teaching instrumental music in schools, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music and four years leading their Music Education Department.

As a composer and arranger, Bullock has created over 600 publications across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. His work with the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributions to Alfred Music's Music Expressions curriculum reflect his commitment to accessible, educationally sound repertoire. He is an ASCAP member since 1980 and has conducted clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England.

Why we love this

Bullock understands first-year band economics and morale in a way few arrangers do. Four complete, contrasting pieces with instant recognition value give your students real programming flexibility, perform the whole concert as one cohesive set, or stretch these across fall and spring performances without doubling up on rehearsal demands. Grade 1 writing that sounds mature enough to impress an audience.

What to expect

The four pieces offer a journey from nostalgic Americana to triumphant classical energy. Red River Valley and A Bicycle Built for Two capture the warmth and simplicity of familiar melodies, while This Old Man adds playful character and the William Tell Overture brings a sense of achievement and lift. The progressions feel natural and rewarding for young players.

Who it's for

Directors of beginning concert bands, middle school groups transitioning from method book material, and educators looking for a cohesive concert program that does not require separate purchases. This kit works equally well for groups taking their first steps on instruments or for younger ensembles in need of accessible, quality literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the orchestration carefully during the William Tell Overture section. Young players often overshadow the melody lines, so mark parts and rehearse with conscious dynamic control.
  • Establish a steady tempo reference for Red River Valley before the band begins. Beginning musicians benefit from a clear pulse, and this folk arrangement works best with rhythmic precision.
  • Use the contrasting tempos across the four pieces to develop your band's flexibility with tempo changes. Moving from a slow ballad to a brisk overture teaches interpretive range.
  • Give yourself adequate rehearsal time with the conductor score before the first full rehearsal. Bullock's arrangements are straightforward, but knowing the part doublings and cues ahead of time pays dividends.

How to use it

Build your first concert entirely from this kit to showcase consistent progress across a meaningful set. Alternatively, space the pieces across your fall and spring calendars, Red River Valley and This Old Man in autumn, A Bicycle Built for Two and William Tell as spring finale markers. The contrasting styles give you natural programming anchors throughout the year.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady tempo across different musical styles
  • Dynamic control and balance between melody and accompaniment
  • Ensemble intonation in simple to moderately complex textures
  • Accurate rhythm reading at the Grade 1 level across four contrasting meters and tempos
  • Musical phrasing and expression within accessible range
